Wilco [the album]
OK, you gotta give Wilco for putting together layers and layers of textured, angsty rock. You gotta give them credit for always looking for some new sorta sound to dig outta their guitars. And usually the songs pay off, at least from a musical interest perspective. But sometimes you just wish they'd cut loose and rock out a little more. Their latest self-named album is a perfect example of this phenomena. But there's several tracks worth cranking up, "Wilco (the song)," "You and I," "You Never Know," and "I'll Fight"
Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women
Dave Alvin helped brng back the roots rock sound with simple electric rockabilly arrangements and his tenure as frontman for the Blasters will be legendary. But now assembled an all-female acoustic band that includes Cndy Cashdollar and Nina Gerber on guitars Laurie Lewis on fiddle and mandolin, Sarah Brown on bass and Lisa Pankratz as the rhythm section. His acoustic rework of "Marie Marie" is fantastic. Other highlights include "California Burning," "Boss of the Blues," "River Under The Road," and "Nana and Jimi."

Freeform American Roots Chart for June 2007
The FAR chart for June has just been released and there's some interesting things about it. The most obvous observation is that Yep Roc is dominating the roots music scene this month, capturing 3 of the 10 top spots. I very pleased to see Leo Rondeau on the charts this month with his Down At The End Of The Bar CD. While his sound is largely a honky tonk sound, I think he's got songwriting chps that are well above the average bar band. Also, I'm glad to see Eilen Jewel still has a strong showing on the charts.

Howdy,
Patterson Hood has a solo CD out called Murdering Oscar. If I had to sum it up, I'd say "more angst, less rock" than DBTs. But that's not a bad thing. If you're into the southern gothic vibe as much as I am, you'll dig Murdering Oscar.
Got a great CD in the mail this week from Atlanta-based Stovall. Good old fshioned country rock from with some excellent sogwriting. I am hoping to feature them on an upcoming episode of the Taproot Music Feed podcast. Also got a CD from an impressive singer/songwriter from North Dakota, Leo Rondeau. The title track from his "Down At The End Of The Bar" goes way beyond honky tonk into some realer-than-life realm. ALso got some buzzy electric blues from AZ Kenny Tsak and a lonesome cowboy CD from Genuine Cowhide.

Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South by Ha Ha Tonka
Where Bloodshot Records digs up these bands, I'll never know. But Ha Ha Tonka sounds a lot like Kings of Leon, which is to say visionary, gritty, and bad-ass all at once. The top tracks are:

Secret, Profane, and Sugarcane by Elvis Costello
Elvis Costello's CD, Secret, Profane, and Sugarcane, has been widely promoted as his "country" CD. But as with all things Elvis Costello, the truth is somewhat more compliacted. When you look at the instrumentation, including accordion, upright base, fiddle, dobro, etc. It's easy to think country music, or perhaps more accurately, roots music. But it often sounds more like bluegrass than anything. But for most people, the distinction isn't very iportant. It sounds twangy. Several of the songs are previous works done on commission for an opera about Hans Christian Anderson. That's not as out in laft field as it might first sound. because the story line is about how Anderson was obsessed with an opera singer who toured the United States during the Civil War. So the songs are rooted in the era and rooted in the music style of the era. The rest of the songs, including one written with Loretta Lynn, sound a little more like roots music. But Elvis Costello never turns loose and writes a simple honky tonk ballad. He still has to write his incredibly complicated lyrics and herky-jerky usical lines. So in the end, the songs sound more like Elvis Costello rock songs adapted for a old-time string band. But ya know what? That's not a bad thing. Notable tracks include:

Together Through Life by Bob Dylan
On his latest CD, Together Through Life, Bob Dylan tries to go lo-fi. If you look clodely at the CD case, it looks almost, but not quite self-produced. The case looks like the type of cases you buy at staples for data CDs. It has the black plastic ridge down the side. On the inside, the CD sits on a simple black pastic tray. The liner notes are minimal. And from a music perspecitive, Dylan seems to be going for a lo-fi approach as well. Most of the songs feel like blues numbers that are approximately a 1000 years old, performed by a bunch of guys that are almost that old themselves. The stroll through these numbers with an easy going grace. Dylan's vocals are, well, the usual. obtuse, hard to hear, secondary almost to the music lines. But the lo-fi facade can't hide the fact that these musicians know what they're doing and every track is a good listen. Highlights for me are:

I have no idea what's going on in the modern day gospel scene. I don't even know if there _is_ a modern day gospel scene. So I ave no idea if Naomi Shelton's CD, What Have You Done, My Brother, is in line with the times, a throw back to yesteryear, or something brand new. But I'll say this, Naomi Shelton's CD, What Have You Done, My Brother, is the gospel CD everyone dreams of. Full of passion, full of devotion, full of funk, full of soul. I suspect for many people out there, this might be their first gospel CD purchase and it will be one they won't ever regret.

A couple of big name additions this week. First, Elvis Costello's country CD, Secret, Profane, and Sugarcane
, was released a few days ago. It's getting mixed reviews, primarily because the songs come from a bunch of past efforts and people accuse Costello of publishing a hodgepodge of songs that don't hang together. That doesn't bother me a bit. The question is, are there any songs that sound good on their own and the answer as far as I'm concerned is hell yes.
The other big name release recently is Bob Dylan's Together Through Life
. While I won't say I like this CD as much as Modern Times. I like the lo-fi blues approach he takes with the songs and there's several good tracks which I'm working into rotation including a rolling border music sounding tune called. "This Dream Of You"
