Greetings,

Tonight, I’ll be playing new music from Danny Barnes and Levon Helms’ contribution to The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams. My interview guest will be Arty Hill! Can’t wait.

Tonght’s Dirty Laundry: Session #4 of Songwritober highlights the work of Harlan Howard, a gentleman once (and perhaps for always) considered the dean of country music songwriters and the person frequently credited with the “three chords and the truth” description of country songwriting. So, yes, you’ll hear Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings on tonight’s episode, but — thanks to Howard’s wide-ranging appeal — you’ll also hear Mavis Staples, James Carr, Allen Toussaint, and Candi Staton.

As usual, local listeners can tune into WCOM 103.5 FM and everyone else can tune into the WCOM netcast.

Greetings,

I am in the process of migrating taproot radio from blogger to wordpress. For a while some of the old links to pages on the site will not work until we get all the necessary redirects in place. No need to update your links. I’ll eventually get all the redirects in place. Just bear with me during this transition period.

Steve Cropper, the Booker T and the MG’s legendary guitarist, has rounded up a bunch of well known artists to help produce Dedicated: A Tribute To The 5 Royales. And there’s no one that deserves a tribute CD more than these North Carolina-based soul stars from the 50’s. They were key in fusing realy doo wop, R&B, and gospel into what we think of as soul music that came out of Memphis and Muscle Shoals in the 60s. So I was very glad to see Steve Cropper’s work to pay tribute to their influence. There are covers of the 5 Royales from Bettye Lavette, Lucinda Williams, B.B. Kink, Buddy Miller and many others. This tribute CD is highly recommended.

Ray Bonneville is one of the best barroom balladeers working today not to mention a guitar player second to no one. Whether is pounding on it like a rock and roll star or creating bluesy atmospherics, he knows how to tell a story in song and music. Every song will keep your attention. There’s always something building in there. His latest CD, Bad Man’s Blues is going into rotation this week and it’s his best work effort. Think Dave Alvin, but more rugged, more scars, more stories.  Highlights for me are “Bad Man’s Blood,” “Sugar and Riley,” “Mississippi,” and “Blonde of Mine.”

Listen to Ray Bonnevile tell the stories behind the songs on Bad Man’s Blood on episode 52 of the Taproot Podcast.

Whether is pounding on it like a rock and roll star or creating bluesy atmospherics, he knows how to tell a story in song and music. Every song will keep your attention. Think Dave Alvin, but more rugged, more scars, more stories.

Patti Smith has a compilation CD out called Outside Society, these remastered tracks keep the raw edge that we know and love in Patti Smith. Even today, it’s amazing how she makes “Gloria” her song. I have also always been a fan of “Dancing Barefoot”, and of course “So You Want To Be A Rock And Roll Star.”  This CD would be a good intro to the world that is Patti Smith if you are new to her.

The Bottle Rockets are not the type of band you’d think of doing easy-listening acoustic sets, but they just released an acoustic performance CD called Not So Loud. They make it work. For Bottle Rockets fans, this CD will give you a new take on some old favorites.

On episode 49 of the Taproot Podcast, Andre Comeau from River Rouge talks about the the movement to return acoustic instruments to Rock and Roll, the origins of the River Rouge band, and how to make it as an indie rocker.

I’m please to announce two new sponsors for the Taproot Podcast. First up is the Austin Corn Lovers Fiesta, sometimes know as “the other ACL Fest” which by sheer coincidence happens to also be based in Austin on the weekend of October 7th just like that other ACL Fest. You can check out the line up at the Fiesta’s Facebook Page.

The Taproot Podcast is also sponsored by The NC Hops and Roots Festival. The North Carolina Hops and Roots Festival is coming to Shakori Hills on Saturday September 3rd. The festival will feature 25 local micro brews, wines from local wineries, a farmers market, food booths from local restaurants, kids activities and a full day of roots music. This family friendly event will feature music from Bill Toms and Hard Rain, the Galactic Cowboy Orchestra, The Lizzy Ross Band, Greg Humpheries, and the Olympic Ass Kicking Team. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. Free camping is available at the Shakori Hills site just south of Chapel Hill. For more information, visit www.nchopsandrootsfest.com.

I’m now taking bookings for sponsorships for October episodes, if you are interested in promoting your event, music label, etc on the Taproot Podcast, visit the sponsorship page.
