Howdy,

I’m excited to be putting into rotation this week a new band, well new to me anyway, called The Far West. They remind me of Charlotte’s Lou Ford quite a bit. Not a lot of flash and bling with these guys, but some fine heart-breaking twang. Several good sing-a-long tracks.

On episode 67 of the Taproot Podcast, Jonathan Harkham from the band Paladino, talks about trying to capture the textures of the southern California landscape and latino culture, listening to his mother’s country music while growing up in Los Angeles, and why he chose to cover “Green Green Grass of Home.”

Y’all have a Happy New Year and I’ll see ya in January. Lots of great podcast interviews lined up and I’m gonna be starting a new regular feature on the site. Stay tuned!

Dig Deep,
Calvin

Howdy,

Hymn For Her took the Americana Music Fest by storm, exploring new corners of the trailer park southern rock territory. Crowds love their live show and their songs have a vision and sense of music that goes way beyond the usual three chord rock and roll. Glad to be adding them into rotation this week.

Also glad to be adding John Lilly’s Cold Comfort CD. He’s pretty much dominated the FAR charts recently. His particular brand of honky tonk is amazingly heartfelt and bittersweet for two-step music.

On episode 65 of the Taproot Radio Podcast, Mary Flower talks about the Piedmont blues as “band in a hand,” how she met Elizabeth Cotten, her square-necked Gibson and when she works it into her shows, playing everywhere from bars to Merlefest, and talks about three tracks from her Misery Loves Company CD.

Finally, by popular request, I have started publishing the weekly rotation as a Spotify play list. See the link in This Week’s Rotation section. Drop me a line if you have any trouble accessing it. As always the week’s rotation can also be listened to on Live 365 and can be viewed and previewed on iTunes.

Howdy,

This week’s big add is Lydia Loveless’ CD, Indestructible Machine. She surprised my by raising the prude in me with her foul mouth, but thankfully Bloodshot has distributed a cleaned up version of her CD for radio airplay. Funny thing. The CD doesn’t come across as any “less” for having been bleeped. Explicit language issues aside, I have to say haven’t heard charged up cowpunk like this in a good long while. Enjoying it very much.

Thanks to those who have inquired about why the rotations are no longer being published on the iTunes store. Well, I keep trying. But it never works. Not sure if the problem is on my side or on the iTunes side. Will get those playlists published if/when I’m able. And if anyone knows how to get the attention of Apple support, please let me know!

My current sponsors’ engagement is winding up this week, which means the primo spot on the web site and podcast messaging is open. So if you know anyone that needs to reach out to hard core americana fans, get in touch with me.

On episode 64 of the Taproot Podcast, Todd Jagger and JR Harrell from The Border Blasters talk about listening to border radio stations when they were kids, their own radio show, the joys of Texas swing, and their experience recording in Sun Studios with ghosts looking over their shoulder.

Dig Deep,

Howdy,

Between visiting friends and family, and eating massive amounts of Thanksgiving dinner, not much happened this week in the way of music auditions. I blame the turkey. And the cranberry sauce (with Amaretto), and stuffing. and chocolate pie. You get the idea. Not a single one of the football teams I root for won this past week. grrrr. But it was good to visit with various branches of my extended family and I got to see new new Muppet movie with a five year old which made it new and fun. Good Thanksgiving all around. I’ll be back on schedule with auditions next week.

I’ve begun working on the Best of 2011 show which will be broadcast on the  live show and the 24×7 webcast. But due to the unfair laws regarding podcasting, I won’t be able to put the Best of 2011 show on the podcast. Write your congressional reps and complain.

On episode 63 of the Taproot Podcast, Scotty Alan talks about living in the wilds of Michigan, his punk rock days, making music at home, how he found himself in Los Angeles to record his CD, Wreck and the Mess, and his “Irish roots.”

I’m boking sponsors and interviews for December shows. So if you have an event you’d like to market to hard core roots audiences, let me know.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

Howdy,

Red Molly is going into rotation this week. Given that Taproot Radio is based in Chapel Hill, NC, I can’t help but compare them to our local legendary female trio, Tres Chicas. I think Red Molly compares favorably to Tres Chicas and there’s room enough for them both on the twangy landscape. I especially like Red Molly’s cover of Bddy Miller’s  “Does My Ring Burn Your Finger” on their latest CD, Light In The Sky.

I’m also adding the band, R. Mutt into rotation this week. I believe they are based out of Wisconsin but they would fit right into any southern rock music festival. heavy hitting straight up rock and roll from these guys. It feels good listening to this in the car.

On Episode 62 of the Taproot Podcast, Ernie Hawkins talks about the influence The Rev Gary Davis’s early days in Durham, the influence Davis has had on his own music, the technique of playing guitar riffs as if they are piano or horm lines, and his upcoming show at the University of North Carolina’s Southern Folklife Center.

Howdy,

Mandoln Orange played at the Berkeley Cafe this past week. I’m proud to say I got their first real interview on an early episode of the podcast. Hayes Carll was also in town this past week, playing at the Cat’s Cradle. So it was good week for music in Carrboro!

In new music news this week, The Elders have a new CD out that’s going into rotation which you should check out. They have a big dramatic sound you don’t often get in roots music.

On Episode 61 of the Taproot Podcast, Tilford Sellers talks about his roots music inspirations on his most recent release, What You’re Doing To Me, how he writes smooth sounding lyrics, and shares a cut from his most recent recording session.

Howdy,
Got some twangy indie rock going into rotation this week from Paladino. They’ve got that deep woods visionary thing down pat. Very interesting and enjoyable music.

Cam Penner’s new CD, Gypsy Summer also going into rotation this week. Kinda reminds me of Ray La Montagne in his songwriting style. Good stuff.

No new podcast eps this week. But I’ve been working on lining up interviews and looks like I’ve got a full plate for the rest of the year! Stay tuned.

Howdy,

New music going into rotation this week from the Jeff Gates band and Sasparilla. Check them out and let me know what you think.

I will be doing the live show as usual on Oct 31, which is Halloween, of course. But I will NOT be doing a show of cheesy monster mash-like tunes. I’m going to do an hour full of the usual hand-picked, road-tested american music. But if you are in the mood for some creepy Halloween themed music, I still highly recommend Southern Culture On The Skids’ Zombiefied.

Two new podcast episodes going into rotation this week because there won’t be one this week.

On episode 59 of the Taproot Podcast, Parker Roads talks about getting back to his roots after his indie rock days, his latest CD, Youngblood, and how is missionary father taught him to appreciate life on the road.

On Episode 60 of the Taproot Podcast, Arty Hill talks about changing the name of his most recent CD, his theory of what makes a song great, getting preloaded on a Ford, and why he had to write a song about drinking charcoal.

Howdy,

Danny Barnes, of Bad Livers’ fame and other subversive bluegrass and rock experiments, has a new CD coming out called Rocket. He’s going full tilt metal now while still dragging his banjo into territory it’s never been before. Among other metal originals, this one’s got a cover of Bang A Gong. Fun stuff. Great to have some excellent rock and roll on the show.

Another notable addition this week is Wreck and Mess from Scotty Alan. Not sure the story behind his music. The one sheet says he lives “off the grind” in Michigan but his accent sounds very Irish to me. And hey, how can you be off the grid if you have a web site. But anyway, I’m picking at nits. I really enjoy his songs.

On episode 58 of the Taproot Podcast, Rick Miller from Southern Culture On The Skids talks about their new CD, Zombiefied, his foray into horror movie video making, his 5 year old son’s band, life at Kudzu Ranch, and the band’s plans for Halloween.

Dig Deep,
Calvin
