The Freeform American roots Chart #128 for March had come out. As usual, some random comments:
My co-host on the WCOM Show, Rick Cornell, has been going gaga over Zoe Muth so it’s encouraging to see her on the top of the chart.
I’m glad to see the Carolina Chocolate Drops coming in at number 2.Because they are based in Durham just up the road. I’d feared that they wouldn’t get much play beyond the region. But this chart is a good indicator that they are making a name for themselves nation-wide.
My personal favorite of the month is the Carrie Rodriguez CD, Love and Circumstance. comes in at number 3, but I’m hoping she’ll move up next month. Her beautiful voice can even tame Merle Haggards tunes.
The Drive-By Truckers debut their new CD The Big To Do at number 7, a fine showing.. I’m very impressed by the Mike Cooley songs, especially “Get Downtown” and “Birthday Boy.”

Some Random Comments from Calvin:

It does my heart good to see a Johnny Cash CD, released this many years after his death can top the FAR chart. This last of the Rick Rubin produced CDs goes to some very dark, moody places. But the darkest songs on this CD are also the most captivating. Highly recommended  but be aware of what you’re getting into.
American VI: Ain’t No Grave

There’s at least two other CDs on the list that have a gospel theme to them. On is the Asylum Street Spanker’s God’s Favorite Band, which is a fun romp into tent revival territory. And the other is a slightly more serious collection of gospel tunes from Patty Griffin called Downtown Church. Not only do you get lots of good uplifting tunes on this CD, you get lots of guest artists includng Buddy Miller, Emmylou Harris, and Raul Malo.
God’s Favorite Band
Downtown Church

Ray Wylie Hubbard’s CD, A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment is still going strong. I’ve been playing it a lot on both the webcast and the live show and it just keeps getting better the more I listen to it.
A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment

I was happy to see the new CD from the Deadstring Brothers at least making it onto the charts, but I hope they make it higher next month. Their latest CD Sao Palo is some of the best blues-rock you’ll ever hear. Sometimes they take a lot of heat for being “too derivitive” or “Rolling Stone imitators.” But heck, I say you gotta take their music at face value and decide whether you like it or not. And if want some straight up blues rock that’s new and exciting you can’t do any better than the Deadstring Brothers.
Sao Palo

Random Comments From Calvin:
The fact that Ray Wylie Hubbard’s CD Ray Wylie Hubbard - A: Enlightenment B: Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C) hit the top of this chart comes as absolutely no surprise to me, but it makes me super excited anyway. It’s kinda like seeing the good guys win after being beaten up over and over again.

I’m hearing lots of good buzz re: Dave Rawlings Machine, Dave Rawlings Machine - A Friend of a Friend which does my heart good. For whatever reason, I’ve heard positive comments from two friends about how much they are enjoying this CD and these are folks who are more into the indie rock scene. Soooo I dunno, maybe Rawlings is like a gateway drug, seducing people into the twang…

I’m glad to see Paul Burch Paul Burch - Still Your Man making his way on to the charts. He’s been one of those artists I’ve (not intentionally) neglected over the years but I want to correct that. I heard a cut off this CD on another podcast and it’s good.

My only other comment on the top 10 of the latest FAR chart is, “How the hell was I not aware that Reckless Kelly has a new CD out????” I tell ya, there’s some days when I’m embarrassed to call myself a DJ……
Update: I see now that it’s not officially out until Feb 9th. Gotta bribe my way on to the Yep Roc comp list or something………

The Freeform American Roots Chart #123 has just come out. Arty Hill continues to be a favorite among FAR reporters. But what really makes me happy is to see Jo Serrapere tie for second. Her CD, Love Going South, is not the usual fare for FAR Chart CDs. It’s much more sultry, and edgy than a lot of CDs we get. On the other hand, Lyle Lovett’s CD debuted at #9 with just a few weeks out. So that’s a very good showing from the Texas Troubador. I was a little surprised that Band of Heathens did not fare better. Maybe next month they’ll move up the charts.

The FAR chart for June has just been released and there’s some interesting things about it. The most obvous observation is that Yep Roc is dominating the roots music scene this month, capturing 3 of the 10 top spots. I very pleased to see Leo Rondeau on the charts this month with his Down At The End Of The Bar CD. While his sound is largely a honky tonk sound, I think he’s got songwriting chps that are well above the average bar band. Also, I’m glad to see Eilen Jewel still has a strong showing on the charts.

Howdy all,

After 4 years of bean counting, I’ve decided to end my monthly compilation of the Taproot Top 20 CDs. It was a difficult decision because I really enjoyed putting it together and seeing the CDs work their way slowly to the tops of the charts.

But the fact of the matter is that it takes a lot of time to compile and due to the nature of how a kept track of the spins, it was always a little bit out of date. It would take three months or so for a CD to work it’s way up to the top of the charts.

I decided it’s better to use a broad sampling chart rather than one specific to Taproot Radio. I’ve been a contributor to the Freeform American Roots chart for a while now and I’ve always found it interesting. This is a chart compiled by polling DJs who have absolute freedom over what music to play (or not) on their shows. And for this reason it’s always interesting to see what’s hot on their list.

So instead of compiling the monthly TOp 20 CDs that reflect only what’s going on in Taproot Radio, I will instead share the FAR chart with you and offer some observations on the trends.

This month’s FAR chart is listed beow.

I was very glad to see Wayne “The Train” Hancock take the top spot on the chart. His brand of 30′s era swing music is happy and upbeat and reminiscent of old time radio. It’s the kind of music that’s impossible to be sad about.

Likewise, I was happy to Eilen Jewell take the number two spot. I’ve got a botleg of her at the Shakori Hills Festival on the Taproot Music Feed relaunch if you want to check her out. It’s interesting that her music is similar to Wayne Hancock’s. It’s rooted in 30′s era swing. But her music often has a tinge of sadness in it, kinda bluesy.

My choice of CD of the month (indicated by *TPR) was John Doe and the Sadies collaboration CD, Country Club. Given John Doe’s recent solo work and the Sadies reputation, I expected a hard edged country-rock CD. But it turned out to be much more melodic and twangy, and straight-up country.

The other notable entry on this month’s chart is The Mystix. They are based out of Boston and I was very happily surprised by their music, kinda reminds me of Hayes Carll.
