Howdy,

New music going into rotation this week from the Jeff Gates band and Sasparilla. Check them out and let me know what you think.

I will be doing the live show as usual on Oct 31, which is Halloween, of course. But I will NOT be doing a show of cheesy monster mash-like tunes. I’m going to do an hour full of the usual hand-picked, road-tested american music. But if you are in the mood for some creepy Halloween themed music, I still highly recommend Southern Culture On The Skids’ Zombiefied.

Two new podcast episodes going into rotation this week because there won’t be one this week.

On episode 59 of the Taproot Podcast, Parker Roads talks about getting back to his roots after his indie rock days, his latest CD, Youngblood, and how is missionary father taught him to appreciate life on the road.

On Episode 60 of the Taproot Podcast, Arty Hill talks about changing the name of his most recent CD, his theory of what makes a song great, getting preloaded on a Ford, and why he had to write a song about drinking charcoal.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams – Various Artists

reviews  Comments Off on The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams – Various Artists

Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams AlbumThe big music release this week is The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams. Here’s how I understand the background of this CD. Apparently Hank Williams had bunches of notebooks of lyrics that were never set to music. Bob Dylan got permission from the estate to ask wel known artists to compose songs built around the lyrics. Dylan put together an all-star line up of folks to write the songs including Alan Jackson, Norah Jones, Vince Gil, Jack White, Levon Helm, Patty Loveless, Sheryl Crow. What’s amazing to me is how well all these artists stayed true to the spirit of the project, creating songs that sound like they could have come from Hank Williams himself. The notable exception is Lucinda Williams’s track where she takes Williams’ melodic lyrics and drags them through the mud, trying to make them sound like moans and wails. Ridiculous. But she’s the exception. The rest of the CD is amazing. Bob Dylan of course contributes a track the the performance which strikes a good balance between Bob Dylan’s style, which, honestly, is the only way he can sing and Hank Williams. But the big surprise on the disc for me was the Jakob Dylan contribution. He took a set of lyrics that sounded like a standard issue honky-tonk song and turned it into a poignant heart breaker of a song. Very good job. Highly recommend this CD.

Greetings,

Tonight, I’ll be playing new music from Danny Barnes and Levon Helms’ contribution to The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams. My interview guest will be Arty Hill! Can’t wait.

Tonght’s Dirty Laundry: Session #4 of Songwritober highlights the work of Harlan Howard, a gentleman once (and perhaps for always) considered the dean of country music songwriters and the person frequently credited with the “three chords and the truth” description of country songwriting. So, yes, you’ll hear Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings on tonight’s episode, but — thanks to Howard’s wide-ranging appeal — you’ll also hear Mavis Staples, James Carr, Allen Toussaint, and Candi Staton.

As usual, local listeners can tune into WCOM 103.5 FM and everyone else can tune into the WCOM netcast.

Howdy,

Danny Barnes, of Bad Livers’ fame and other subversive bluegrass and rock experiments, has a new CD coming out called Rocket. He’s going full tilt metal now while still dragging his banjo into territory it’s never been before. Among other metal originals, this one’s got a cover of Bang A Gong. Fun stuff. Great to have some excellent rock and roll on the show.

Another notable addition this week is Wreck and Mess from Scotty Alan. Not sure the story behind his music. The one sheet says he lives “off the grind” in Michigan but his accent sounds very Irish to me. And hey, how can you be off the grid if you have a web site. But anyway, I’m picking at nits. I really enjoy his songs.

On episode 58 of the Taproot Podcast, Rick Miller from Southern Culture On The Skids talks about their new CD, Zombiefied, his foray into horror movie video making, his 5 year old son’s band, life at Kudzu Ranch, and the band’s plans for Halloween.
