Review: Welding Burns by Rod Picott

Uncategorized  Comments Off on Review: Welding Burns by Rod Picott

Rod Picott’s latest CD, Welding Burns, is just right for the times, which is to say it’s about tough people working their way through hard times. It’s a CD full of stories about people doing the right thing sometimes, and sometimes, well, not so much. Picott’s CD comes across as a set of tough as nails rock and roll ballads tempered with just a little bit of mournful country twang. Highlights for me are the title track, “410,” and “Sheetrock”.

Howdy,

Added the new Band of Heathens CD this week, They are pushing that deep south proto-funk to the limits and I like it.  Also added new music from Larabee and The Wilders  and old music from the Wood Brothers to round out the mix.

FAR Chart #142 and Calvin’s Comments

far-chart  Comments Off on FAR Chart #142 and Calvin’s Comments
Jun 122011

FAR Chart #142 is out, John Conquest, the chart compiler professed surprise that Rod Picott came out on top, but not me. My co-host on the WCOM show, Rick Cornell gave me the heads up on this CD so when it came in the mail I immediately threw it in the car CD player. Rod Picott manages to write songs that simultaneously feel deeply authentic and personal while speaking to something that’s universal. And his take on our current hard economic times is cliche’ free. So I’m glad to see him taking the top spot.

Two of my recent favorites tied for number 5. Tokyo Rosenthal’s Who Was That Man applies sees the modern world through the lens of a Western movie, and it works. Amazingly well. Toke’s got an eye for the dramatic. Bettysoo and Doug Cox turn in a set of singer-songwriter tunes which cover both the new and the traditional sounds of folk. But what makes them standout is how well the guitar work intertwines with and complements Bettysoo’s vocals. I’d love to see them perform live sometime.

Mark Junger’s CD, More Like A God Dog Than A Bad Cat, is still going strong on the chart and still getting heavy rotation play from me. good blues/country crossover fare.

And finally, I have to give props to The Border Blasters’ new CD, The Sun Sessions. I believe it is a studio produced CD, but this collection of songs are so easy-going and relaxed it has a back porch music vibe which I really really like.

#1 Rod Picotticon: Welding Burns (Welding Rod)
2 Eliza Gilkyson: Roses At The End Of Time (Red House)
3 Gal Holiday & The Honky Tonk Revue: Set Two (HTRP)
4 Amanda Shires: Carrying Lightning (self)
5= BettySoo & Doug Cox: Across The Borderline; Lie To Me (Borderline Talent)
Tokyo Rosenthalicon: Who Was That Man ( Rock & Socks)
6 The Sweetback Sisters: Looking For A Fight (Signature Sounds)
7 Mark Jungersicon: More Like A Good Dog Than A Bad Cat (American Rural)
8 Steve Earle: I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive (New West)
9= Michael Fracasso: Saint Monday (Little Fugi)
Owen Temple: Mountain Home (El Paisano)
10 Border Blastersicon: The Sun Session (Boquillas)

Howdy,

New Border Blasters. Need I say anything more? This one’s gotta Texas swing kinda feel but in a very relaxed, back-porch music kinda way. Love it. You will too.

No new podcasts this week. In fact there’s gonna be a summer break for the podcast. I’ll be starting it back up after July 4.
