Howdy,

This week I received the Johnny Cash Bootleg Vol II CD in the mail. Interesting disk for J.C. fans. There’s a recording from one of his early radio shows in Memphis. It’s interesting to hear him hawking a hardware store between songs.  There’s also lots of early demos, especially from his Sun recording days. I enjoyed a demo of a song called “Leave That Junk Alone”  a lot, and it’s interesting consider the trouble he had with drugs and alcohol later. But for me the highlight of the CD was the song, “Wide Open Road,” which is not exactly a rare track of his. But it’s a song of his you don’t hear that often. There’s a live performance of it on the radio show segment and then also Sun released version.

Paul Thorn is my guest on episode 26 of the Taproot Radio Podcast. I like his unique brand of good-natured bar bandmusic. He tells me about the treasured music artifact in his house, what it’s like to be a self-produced musician, and the stories behind the songs from his Pimps and Preachers CD.

Also, I’m happy to say Rick Cornell has given me permission to publish his interview with Jason Perlmutter and Brendan Greaves from Carrboro’s Paradise of Bachelors label talking about their recent release, Had A Vision, a compilation of music for North Carolinian Soul singer and producer, David Lee. This came out episode 27 of the Taproot Radio Podcast.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

Review: Wounded Electric Youth by Adam Klein

Uncategorized  Comments Off on Review: Wounded Electric Youth by Adam Klein
Feb 242011

Adam Klein’s CD, Wounded Electric Youth, reminds me of the early days of Whiskeytown. There’s a high lonesome sound in the fiddles and a hint of Gram Parsons in the electric guitars. The songs have an easy-going tempo that feels quietly content. Likewise Klein’s songwriting reminds me of Ryan Adams. Stripped of the faux-country window dressing that plagues so much of roots music these days, Klein’s lyrics have a here-and-now feel to them. The highlight tracks for me are “Driftin'” and “Wayward Son.”
