Rotation #240, Septe,mber 27, 2010

Howdy,

Lots of good music going into rotation this week. Georgia Warhorse from JJ Grey and Mofro is just what you’d expect from these guys excpet maybe a little more down tempo than usual. But the change in pace let’s Grey’s lyrics stand out more than usual. I’m thinking it’s gonna be one of my top 10 for the year. Lynne Hanson from Canada has a pretty good americana/country CD out which I’ve been coming back to quite a bit. But the surprise of the month comes from Yvette Landry from deep in cajun country. She’s got a knock-down honky-tonk CD out now that I’m gonna be playing a lot. Normally I get tired of honky tonk pretty quickly, but this CD has stood up to many repeats in the Calvin-mobile.

But the best CD out recently, for my money, has got to be the new Mavis Staples CD. As I said in my review, you don’t have to be a Christian to feel the power of this gospel music. Loads of guest musicians and writers on this one including Jeff Tweedy and Randy Newman.

Speaking of Yvette Landry, I’m happy to announce the latest episode of The Taproot Radio Podcast is out, featuring and interview and three tracks from Yvette Landry’s debut CD, Should Have Known.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

“Ms Landry has made herself (and us!) one fine disc here. The writing and singing show a depth and confidence that belies the fact that this is her first effort. 16 songs, all written by her, run the gamut from heart-on-the-sleeve ballads to kick-ass romps. This collection is rooted in country music, and, like the best of the genre, it draws to great effect on the neighboring styles of cajun, blues and rock ‘n’ roll. By country, I mean the stuff that tells a story that sounds like it actually happened – songs where you can still hear a heart breaking.

Luckily for us, lest we get drawn down Lament Lane and Poignant Place past the point of no return (don’t get me wrong, there’s no place I’d rather spend an evening) there’s plenty of rambunctious action here. Yvette has cranked up a bunch of fine up-tempo songs as well, and the rock ‘n’ roll rolls just as well as it rocks.

Produced in Louisiana by Joel Savoy and Yvette, there is no shortage of great steel and fiddle playing in the mix. All in all a mighty fine record.”

Put your hands on your radio and feel the power! (or speakers, or ear buds). Sweet Jesus! Mavis Staples gives you the good news as only she can on her latest CD, You Are Not Alone. She knows exactly how to phrase each line of the song for maximum impact and it’s enough the convert even the coldest secular heart, or at least get them to tap their toes. But seriously, you don’t have to be into Gospel music or even a Christian to appreciate and enjoy this CD. It’s chock full of guest appearances from the likes of Jeff Tweedy who gives the songs an edge with his grindy guitar work. Mavis also sings songs written my some guest artists, including a Randy Newman song called “Losing You” which is turns out to be a perfect show case for Staples’ voice. Other highlights for me are “Don’t Knock,” “You Are Not Alone,” and “Downward Road.”

Kevin Russell has always been the good ol’ boy counter point to Jimmy Smith’s out in the weeds songwriting. So I was afraid when I heard that Kevin Russel’s shinyribs persona was releasing an album I didn’t have high hopes. But I have to say “Well, After Awhile,” despite the uber-generic title, has some of the best damn songwriting I’ve heard. The highlights for me are “East Tx Rust,” “Country Cool,” “Poor People’s Store,” and “Fisherman’s Friend.”
