Red Dog Speaks by Elvin Bishop

On his second release for Delta Groove Records, Elvin Bishop names the CD after his guitar “Red Dog.” It’s a fine tribute too because when you look back at his decades long career in music, Elvin Bishop has always been a blues guitarist first and foremost and despite the all star line up of guests on the CD it’s the guitar that stands out the most. You could cut a cord of wood with the guitar riff on the opening track. “Red Dog Speaks.” Other highlights for me are “Get Your Hand Out Of My Pocket,” “Midnight Hour Blues,” and “Neighbor Neighbor.”

Rotation #230, June 21,2010

Howdy,

Added the new Tom Petty into rotation this week. Much is being made of the fact that this album was made with the Heartbreakers which he hasn’t done in a while, but to be honest it sounds to me more like a continuation of his Mudcrutch CD as much as anything else, which is to say it’s pretty darn good.

Been at the beach this past week, so haven’t had a chance to dig through the slush pile of incoming CDs. Will try to catch up next week.

Episode 11 of the Taproot Music Feed Podacastis out! This episode features Kelley Ryan on “the boy way vs the girls way of making music,” Black Bone Child telling the story behind releasing two CDs at the same time, and The Running Kind on the irony behind their band name.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

FAR Chart #130

far-chart  Comments Off on FAR Chart #130
Jun 132010

FAR Chart #130 is out and as usual I can’t help but make a few comments.

1 Stone River Boys: Love On The Dial (Cow Island)
2 Sally Spring: Made Of Stars (Sniffinpup)
3 Merle Haggard: I Am What I Am (Vanguard)
4 Kevin Welch: A Patch Of Blue Sky (Music Road)
5 Bill Kirchen: Word To The Wise (Proper American)
6 Cornell Hurd Band: A Bad Year For Love (Behemoth)
7 Terri Hendrix: Cry Till You Laugh (Willory)
8 Peter Wolf: Midnight Souvenirs (Verve)
9 Elizabeth Cook: Welder (31 Tigers)
Miss Leslie: Wrong Is What I Do Best (Zero Label)
The Sadies: Darker Circles (Yep Roc)
10 Mary Gauthier: The Foundling (Razor & Tie)
11 Zoe Muth & The Lost High Rollers (Sonicboom)
12 Jim Lauderdale: Patchwork River (Emergent)
13 Susan Cowsill: Lighthouse (Threadhead)
14 Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three: Riverboat Soul (Free Dirt)
15 Anders Osborne: American Patchwork (Alligator)
J Shogren: Bird Bones And Muscle (Jaha!)
16 Darrell Scott: A Crooked Road (Full Light)
17 Tim Eriksen: Soul Of The January Hills (Appleseed)
Guthrie Kennard: Matchbox (Rango)
Andre Williams: That’s All I Need (Bloodshot)
18 Mars Arizona: High Desert (Big Barn)
Hank Williams III: Rebel Within (Sidewalk)
19 Johnny Gimble: Celebrating With Friends (CMH)
David Olney: Dutchman’s Curve (Deadbeet)
20 Kathy Kallick Band: Between The Hollow And The High-Rise (Live Oak)
John Prine: In Person & On Stage (Oh Boy)

First and foremost, I’m very happy to see Stone River Boys hitting the top of the charts with their “country funk” crossover.

Was a little sad to see that Peter Wolf comes in at number 8. I think he deserves to be higher on the chart. His Midnight Souvenirs CD is getting a lot of play across a wide variety of radio shows. But in any case, getting into the top 10 is good. Maybe he’ll score higher next month.

Lastly J. Shogren broke into the top 20 list too with his latest CD, Bird Bone and Muscle. His lyrics are quirky and engaging and downright addictive. Check him out when you get chance.
