Happy Memorial Day!

Thanks to all our men and women in the armed services for keeping us safe and free.

For some reason this is my favorite patriotic song. I’d vote for it being the national anthem. I like the fact that it’s upbeat and happy.

Notes: Fantastic house concert from Elizabeth Cook, joined by guitarist/husband Tim Carroll and ex-Midnight Oil guy Bones Hillman on “hillbilly upright bass” (in Cook’s words), this past Saturday night courtesy of Forty Acres…

So Soon / Aretha Franklin / Rare & Unreleased Recordings from the Golden Reign of the Queen of Soul / 2:46
Made of Stars / Sally Spring / Made of Stars / 4:14
You’re a Man of Words, I’m a Woman of Action / Bettye LaVette / Lost Soul / 3:03

Born a Woman / Sandy Posey / 34 Great American Songs / 2:07
Homewrecker / Janiva Magness / The Devil Is an Angel Too / 3:37
Notes: Zooey-riffic version of NRBQ’s classic, Beach Boys-ish “Ridin’ in My Car.” Nick Lowe wrote “Homewrecker” and recorded it for his The Convincer album. Wonderful job by Janiva Magness of making it her own. And Lowe, offbeat sense of humor firmly in place, covered “Born a Woman” early in his solo career.

I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down / Ann Peebles / Hi Times: The Hi Records R&B Years / 2:48
Avenue of the Indians / Susan Cowsill / Lighthouse / 3:39
Do Your Duty / Candi Staton / Candi Staton / 2:33
Notes: Janiva Magness also covers “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down on her new one. Figured we’d listen to Ann Peebles’ version. Graham Parker and the Rumour also recorded the song.

One Notch Tighter / Nora Jane Struthers / Nora Jane Struthers / 3:10
Wedlock Is a Padlock / Laura Lee / Women’s Love Rights / 3:10
Old #7 / Shelby Lynne / Tears, Lies, and Alibis / 3:34
Notes Nora Jane Struthers, with a sound right out of the dustbowl era, will be at the Six String Café at the end of this month.

The First Cut Is the Deepest / P.P. Arnold / Soul Diva Sessions / 3:17
