Dirty Laundry – Rick – 10-11pm

A huge variety tonight, perhaps even an overly self-conscious effort to be all over the musical map — albeit, with at least one toe dipped into the roots or soul water. There’s bluesy jazz (or jazzy blues — either tag is acceptable), Rumour-backed reggae, rockin’ gospel, cheating soul with a twist, and some straight-up country.

I Don’t Wanna Know / Peter Wolf / Midnight Souvenirs / 2:55
Didn’t It Rain / Sister Rosetta Tharpe / The Original Soul Sister / 2:36

Short Side of Nothing / Sally Spring / Made of Stars / 3:18
Have a Little Mercy / Ann Sexton / You’re Gonna Miss Me / 2:48
Note: Why Didn’t You Call Me / Shelby Lynne / Tears, Lies, and Alibis / 1:41

Problems / Desmond Dekker / Black and Dekker/Compass Points / 3:10
The Way of the World / Mose Allison / The Way of the World / 2:50
Did I Come Back to Soon (Or Stay Away Too Long) / Freddie North / Friend / 3:08
Note: Desmond Dekker is backed by a couple members of the Rumour, including Brinsley Schwarz, on “Problems.” Joe Henry cowrote the title track to Mose Allison’s new one (with Allison), and Henry also produced the record. Nothing really to say about the Freddie North song — written by Swamp Dogg and frequent collaborators Charlie Whitehead and Gary US Bonds — except to ask “Did you see that coming?”

Easy / Mandolin Orange / Quiet Little Room / 3:49
I’ll Get Along / Ann Peebles / The Complete Ann Peebles on Hi Records: Volume 1: 1969-1973 / 2:13
I Want to Get Lost / Charlotte Park Rangers / Charlotte Park Rangers / 4:10
Note: CD release show for Carrboro duo Mandolin Orange on Saturday, May 1, at Local 506.

Anything That You Ask for / David Ruffin / David / 2:55
Stop the Bar / Mike Stinson / The Jukebox in Your Heart / 2:28
Note: Hold You Back / JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound / Beat of Our Own Drum / 3:34

Security / Otis Redding / Live on the Sunset Strip / 2:57
Stranger in the City / Merle Haggard / I Am What I Am / 2:11
Note: Ending with a couple of pretty big names… The live two-disc Otis Redding collection is out in mid May.

live: Monday nights at 9pm eastern on WCOM: http://www.wcomfm.org

Howdy,

There’s so much new music going into the library this week I don’t hardly know where to start. Willie Nelson has a CD out called simply Country Music and that’s exactly what it is. The thing I like about this CD is that it reminds me of the “jamborees” my grandparents used to take me to when I was a kid and I’d visit them in Texas. The songs are simple, easy to sing along with, and usually have clean catchy lyrics. Good fun.

And whoa! Janiva Magness has a new CD out which makes me want to throw myself on the ground and start speaking in tongues. She has a voice that goes straight into my brain and there’s not a single weak track on the entire CD.

I’m loving the new Shelby Lynn CD as well. As I understand it, this CD is self produced. I’m always glad to see artists self-producing their music. Gives them absolute freedom to experiment or do what they love. While the new SHelby Lynn CD doesn’t break any new territory, you do get the sense that this collection of songs are here because they are the ones she likes best.

The new Yarn CD is well, about what you would expect from Yarn which is to say some twangy roots music but not over the top. Very feel good, easy going with lyrics and vocals that remind me of early Paul Simon. A very good listen indeed.

I shelled out relatively big buck for a compilation of Jimmy Donley songs. His prime years were around ’55-’57 and the songs reflect the attitudes of the era. It seems to me that his producers burdened him with crappy song structures and backing bands. But there’s a few cuts on the CD that feel like he’s really enjoying himself and it was worth every penny.

This week’s happy surprise in the mail came from a guy named Caleb Klauder. I’d not heard of him before. The opening track of his CD, “Dangerous Mes and Poisonous Yous.” blew me away. Funny thing is, I can’t say why. Sometimes the simplest songs perfectly executed are the ones that are so powerul.

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet, check out Episode 9 of the Taproot Music Feed podcast, featuring interviews and music from Shelley King, Justin Evans, and Stacy Webster. Check it out and let me know what you think. If you have any suggestions for artists to feature in upcoming episodes, let me know.

Don’t forget, the first ever Taproot House Concert, featuring the return of Americana Legends, Hooverville is on Sunday the 25th!

Rotation #223 – April 13, 2010
read: http://www.taprootradio.com
listen: http://www.loudcaster.com/channels/21-taproot-radio
live: Monday nights at 9pm eastern on WCOM: http://www.wcomfm.org

Howdy,

Looks like it’s soul week on Taproot Radio. I added the new Sharon Jones CD, I Learned The Hard Way into rotation. The grooves on this one are a lot more sultry and smoky on this CD than in her previous CDs giving her a chance to put more emotional oomph into her songs. By the way, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are coming to the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro on May 11. That’s a show not to miss.

Also this week, I added the new Solomon Burke CD, Nothing’s Impossible, into rotation. As others have said before, it’s almost impossible not to make a great CD with Solomon Burke. Having said that, I’ll say that this one feels quite a bit different than many of his previous CDs. This CD has more of a 70′s and 80′s R&B feel to it than  a50′s/60′s classic country/soul feel that we get from most of his CDs. But, it’s good. Just different.

Speaking of shows not to miss. I also saw that Junior Brown is coming to the Cat’s Cradle on April 29th.

Don’t forget, the first ever Taproot House Concert, featuring the return of Americana Legends, Hooverville is two weeks away. Mark your calendar for April 25 if you are in the Durham/Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Raleigh area.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

The Freeform American roots Chart #128 for March had come out. As usual, some random comments:
My co-host on the WCOM Show, Rick Cornell, has been going gaga over Zoe Muth so it’s encouraging to see her on the top of the chart.
I’m glad to see the Carolina Chocolate Drops coming in at number 2.Because they are based in Durham just up the road. I’d feared that they wouldn’t get much play beyond the region. But this chart is a good indicator that they are making a name for themselves nation-wide.
My personal favorite of the month is the Carrie Rodriguez CD, Love and Circumstance. comes in at number 3, but I’m hoping she’ll move up next month. Her beautiful voice can even tame Merle Haggards tunes.
The Drive-By Truckers debut their new CD The Big To Do at number 7, a fine showing.. I’m very impressed by the Mike Cooley songs, especially “Get Downtown” and “Birthday Boy.”
