Rotation #221 – March 29, 2010

I’m happy to announce the release of Episode 9 of the Taproot Music Feed podcast, featuring interviews and music from Shelley King, Justin Evans, and Stacy Webster. Check it out and let me know what you think. If you have any suggestions for artists to feature in upcoming episodes, let me know.

I finally listened to the Crazy Heart sound track this week. Was glad to see Buck Owens “Trouble” featured on the CD, not to mention a track from the Louvin Brothers and Townes Van Zandt. If you can say nothing else about the movie and the sound track, you can say that it has the chance of introducing a bunch of movie goers to good music they didn’t know existed.  Jeff Bridges, Colin Farrell, and Robert Duvall all manage to do justic to their songs, and the I think the Ryan Bingham originals are decent songs, though they make me want to hear more of his rawk!

Lots of new music in the mix this week. The latest Drive-By Truckers has been added. Have to say that Mike Cooley is a kick ass song writer, but you probably already knew that. Other highlights in the new music are The Mannish Boys who’ve put out a great CD that covers a lot of bases in one CD and the surprise of the week, which is AJ Downing and The Buick. Their CD, Way Back Home, is full of catchy twang

Don’t forget, the first ever Taproot House Concert, featuring the return of Americana Legends, Hooverville is less than a month a way. Mark your calendar for April 25 if you are in the Durham/Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Raleigh area.Visit house.taprootradio.com for all the details.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

Let’s Not Believe Our Eyes / Charlotte Park Rangers / Charlotte Park Rangers / 3:55
If You Took a Survey / Bobby Patterson / Soul of the Man / 2:39
Notes: I’m doing the reverse of last week’s one new roots song + one old soul song + one old-fave roots song recipe. This week it’s two soul songs (one recent and one from the ’60s or ’70s) sandwiching a rootsy song. Also, the roots songs are all connected, a thread I’ll explain after the last full set.

Two Steps / Alice Russell / Pot of Gold / 3:47
Little John / Gwil Owen / Ahab’s Birthday / 4:02
You’ve Got Me on the Critical List / Don Covay / Mercy Mercy: The Definitive Don Covay / 2:07

Because of You / The Revelations / Deep Soul / 3:46
Open to Love / Will Kimbrough / Wings / 3:23
Shoot ‘Em All Down / Howard Tate / Get It While You Can: The Complete Legendary Verve Sessions / 2:38

Make Her Mine / Mayer Hawthorne / A Strange Arrangement / 2:42
A Cockroach after the Bomb / Tommy Womack / There, I Said It! / 2:56
Cover Me / Bettye Swann / Bettye Swann / 2:32

The Real Deal / The Dynamites Featuring Charles Walker / Burn It Down / 3:45
Cheatham Street Warehouse / Todd Snider / Peace, Love and Anarchy (Rarities, B-Sides and Demos, Vol. 1) / 4:28
In Between Tears / Irma Thomas / A Woman’s Viewpoint: The Essential 1970s Recordings / 2:34
Notes: Okay, here’s the roots thread…. Richard Ferreira is one of the Charlotte Park Rangers (track down his Somewhereville record of several years back), and he plays on and coproduced Gwil Owens’ record. The Owens song we heard was cowritten by Owens and Will Kimbrough, and we then heard from Kimbrough and his Daddy mate, Tommy Womack. (Both were in the Bis-Quits together as well.) Lastly, a Todd Snider song with Womack on guitar; both Womack and Kimbrough are part of Snider’s Nervous Wrecks. Got all that?

Raleigh and Spencer / The Darnell Woodies / The Darnell Woodies / 2:36

Some Random Comments from Calvin:

It does my heart good to see a Johnny Cash CD, released this many years after his death can top the FAR chart. This last of the Rick Rubin produced CDs goes to some very dark, moody places. But the darkest songs on this CD are also the most captivating. Highly recommended  but be aware of what you’re getting into.
American VI: Ain’t No Grave

There’s at least two other CDs on the list that have a gospel theme to them. On is the Asylum Street Spanker’s God’s Favorite Band, which is a fun romp into tent revival territory. And the other is a slightly more serious collection of gospel tunes from Patty Griffin called Downtown Church. Not only do you get lots of good uplifting tunes on this CD, you get lots of guest artists includng Buddy Miller, Emmylou Harris, and Raul Malo.
God’s Favorite Band
Downtown Church

Ray Wylie Hubbard’s CD, A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment is still going strong. I’ve been playing it a lot on both the webcast and the live show and it just keeps getting better the more I listen to it.
A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment

I was happy to see the new CD from the Deadstring Brothers at least making it onto the charts, but I hope they make it higher next month. Their latest CD Sao Palo is some of the best blues-rock you’ll ever hear. Sometimes they take a lot of heat for being “too derivitive” or “Rolling Stone imitators.” But heck, I say you gotta take their music at face value and decide whether you like it or not. And if want some straight up blues rock that’s new and exciting you can’t do any better than the Deadstring Brothers.
Sao Palo
