Howdy,
One of the oldest rules in politics is "First they make everyone a criminal, then they arrest the people they don't like." This has been playing out in Raleigh recently. On a small scale perhaps, but the rule has been proven. At issue is a series of house concerts sponsored by long time folk musician, Bett Padgett. She has been hosting house concerts for many years where she hosts the artists and puts on a performance in her living room. She collects a fee for attendance and all the proceeds go to the artists who perform. She heavily subsidizes the these events in both time and money. These house concerts are very popular and reservations for her events fill up in the first few minutes after she announces them.
Well, someone complained to the city council who has now ruled that Bett is a criminal for engaging in business activity out of her home and for holding more than three gatherings at her house per year. Apparently the Raleigh City Council has a statist streak in them, thinking they have the right to decide how many events you can host in your own home each year and whether or not having a house concert is a business activity. (And by the way, what exactly is wrong with engaging in a business activity in your house as long as you aren't disturbing or endangering your neighbors?).
Our local progressive newspaper The Independent has a full story about this outrage. For those of you in Raleigh, I strongly urge you to vote your council out of office next election.
