Taproot's roving reporter from Austin, the mysteriously single-named Phil, is in charge of scoping out the hippest acts from 6th Street and surrounding environs. His most recent discovery is Uncle Lucius who is billed as "the next Black Crowes." When Phil told me about this band, my iniital reaction was "Sacriledge!" But now I'm willing to accept that the Mt Olympus of southern rock may have room for two bands.
The other pleasant discovery this week is a band called the Mayflies. They have a couple or three CDs out, the latest is called A Thousand Small Things. I guess I'd call their music a country rock sorta thing, but it's got a positive energy to it kinda like a jam band.
Lastly, Shelley King's CD, Welcome Home had been sitting on my slush pile for way to long and when I started sampling the tracks I was kicking myself for ot getting it into rotation much much sooner. I guess I'd call it hill country music with a gospel influence and maybe there's a hint of Band of Heathens thrown in. There are folks from the subdudes in her latest line up which explains a lot of that. Very good listening.
