*** Sing Along Song: You Never Even Called Me By My Name
Well, it was all that I could do to keep from cryin’
Sometimes it seems so useless to remain
You don’t have to call me darlin’…darlin’
You never even call me by my name.

Well, you don’t have to call me Waylon Jennings
And you don’t have to call me Charley Pride.
And you don’t have to call me Merle Haggard, anymore.
Even though your on my fightin’ side.

And I’ll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin’ in the rain.
You don’t have to call me darlin’…darlin’
You never even call me by my name.

Well, I’ve heard my name a few times in your phone book
And I’ve seen it on signs where I’ve played But the only time I know I’ll hear David Allan Coe
Is when Jesus has his final judgement day.

So I’ll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin’ in the rain.
You don’t have to call me darlin’…darlin’
You never even call me by my name.

Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song
And he told me it was the perfect country-western song
I wrote him back a letter and told him it was NOT the perfect country-western song because he hadn’t said anything at all about
mama, or trains, or trucks, or prison, or gettin’ drunk.
Well, he sat down and wrote another verse to the song and he sent it to me
And after reading it, I realized that my friend had written the perfect country-western song.
And I felt obliged to include it on this album. The last verse goes like this here:

Well, I was drunk the day my Mom got outta prison.
And I went to pick her up in the rain.
But, before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got runned over by a damned old train.

And I’ll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin’ in the rain. No,
You don’t have to call me darlin’…darlin’
You never even call me
Well, I wonder why you don’t call me
Why don’t you ever call me by my name?

Taproot Radio Live Monday Night 9-11pm EDT

Howdy,

I’ll be hosting the Taproot Radio show live tonight on WCOM from 9-11pm. You can listen in at 103.5FM or via the webcast.

Tonight I’ll be featuring new music from the country-rock from Bottle Rockets, blues from Fiona Boyes, and some kick-ass RAWK from The Parlor Mob. I’ll also be playing music from Bob Dylan’s latest blues CD, Ian Thomas’ latest release, some heavy rockabilly from Heavy Trash, southern rock from Atlanta’s Stovall, the sweet sounds of Eilen Jewel, gospel music from Naomi Shelton, honky tonk from Leo Rondeau.

This week’s sing along song is the best country song ever, “You Don’t Even Call Me By My Name” by Steve Goodman as performed by David Allen Coe. Some come on and jump in on the chorus. You know you want to.

The full play list and lyrics for the sing along are posted at the web site. So tune in and listen to an under-slept and over-caffeinated Calvin stumble through his talk sets.

Howdy,

I’m pleased to announce that the Taproot Radio web cast is back in business with a new provider, Loudcaster! The service is still in test mode but the god folks at Loudcaster knew that it would be wrong to deny you the best roots rock, alt.country, delta blues and righteous soul music so they agreed to make some space for Taproot Radio on their test servers.

Check out the listen now link on the right side of the page or try this link.

Enjoy!

Rotation #198 – July 27, 2009
read: http://www.taprootradio.com
webcast: temporarily suspended. stay tuned for a new web cast.
live: Monday nights at 9pm eastern on WCOM.

Howdy,

Got the new Bottle Rockets CD this week have been impressed with it so far. They have a few tracks that verge on deep soul/bluse cross over ala Black Crowes which I’ve been getting into alot. I hope they go further down that path in the future.

I can’t get enough of the new Fiona Boyes CD either. She holds her own in the tough blues woman crowd. She’s been to our area before and I hope she’ll tour out this way again soon.

The Taproot Roving Reporter, Phil, put me on to The Parlor Mob. File their latest CD, And You Were A Crow, under RAWK. I hear they will be playing Austin City Limits this year so I’m gonna go check them out and try to get a bootleg or two.

I’m still searching for a new (legal) service to host the Taproot web cast. If you know of any good web casting companies, send me an e-mail to director@taprootradio.com.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

Taproot Webcast Suspended

I’m sad to report that the Taproot Webcast has been suspended indefinitely. My current contract with live365 came up for renewal and I decided that I need to find a better deal that is a) more economically viable for me and b) doesn’t force my listeners to endure really bad commercials every 12 minutes.

If you know of any alternate services for hosting a radio webcast, a legal webcast, please send an e-mail to feedback@taprootradio.com.

Thanks!

OK, you gotta give Wilco for putting together layers and layers of textured, angsty rock. You gotta give them credit for always looking for some new sorta sound to dig outta their guitars. And usually the songs pay off, at least from a musical interest perspective. But sometimes you just wish they’d cut loose and rock out a little more. Their latest self-named album is a perfect example of this phenomena. But there’s several tracks worth cranking up, “Wilco (the song),” “You and I,” “You Never Know,” and “I’ll Fight”

Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women

Dave Alvin helped brng back the roots rock sound with simple electric rockabilly arrangements and his tenure as frontman for the Blasters will be legendary. But now assembled an all-female acoustic band that includes Cndy Cashdollar and Nina Gerber on guitars Laurie Lewis on fiddle and mandolin, Sarah Brown on bass and Lisa Pankratz as the rhythm section. His acoustic rework of “Marie Marie” is fantastic. Other highlights include “California Burning,” “Boss of the Blues,” “River Under The Road,” and “Nana and Jimi.”
