Howdy,

The juggernaut known as the Taproot Media Empire rolls in into new territory this week. Thanks to recent announcements from live365.com, you can now listen to Taproot Radio on your Blackberry, Windows Media Player and, wait for it…….., the iPhone! Check out the Live365 Smartphone page for more information on how to down load the app for your device. Add Taproot Radio to youe live365 presets and then you’re good to go. Enjoy.

If you haven’t already heard, I’ve published the second episode of the podcast, rechristened as “The Taproot Music Feed”. This episode features music and interviews with The Sleepless Nights, a Chapel Hill-based Gram Parson’s tribute band and Nashville-based Judy Wright. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Thanks to the Famous Johnny Mambo at WCOM, I heard about Snoop Dogg’s Johnny Cash tribute song. I’ve linked to the video here. I also ran across a cover of “I Walk The Line” by Edward Kowalczyk of Live. Good to see Cash gettin’ some respeck, as they say.

One of the best surprises I’ve gotten in the mail recently is the new CD Already Gone from The Kieran Ridge Band. I’m loving the Irish folk influence in his music. Kinda sounds like a cross between Bruce Springsteen and Flogging Molly. I’m going to have a Kieran Ridge interview on a future podcast episode.

I also recently received Days On Their Side from Gina Villalobos. She’s based in California and has an LA heavy rock vibe going for her and her gritty lyrics make me think of her as a female version of Patterson Hood. Chills the blood to think of it, I know. But there ya go.

Closer to home, be sure to check out Dehlia Low’s latest CD Tellico. They are based out of Asheville and have that old time string music down pat. Lead singers Anya and Stacy will be featured on an upcoming podcast.

But wait there’s more. Dap Tone records, the same folks who brought us Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings as well as The Budos Band has a released a soul/gospel cross over CD from Naomi Shlton and The Gospel Queens that will make you say “amen” over and over again.

There’s two additions to the library this week from Blood Shot Records, Ha Ha Tonka’s CD. Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South. And finally, the other noteworthy addition to the music library is the latest CD from Scott H Biram, Something’s Wrong/Lost Forever. He’s still doing that barn-burning backwoods visionary thing and it sounds great. I’ve also posted a video of his song, “Hit The Road.”

Dig Deep,
Calvin

That Tulsa Sound

J.J. Cale came out with a new CD, earlier this year called Roll On. Honestly, I didn’t know too much about him. I knew that he was famous for being the composer of “Cocaine” and “After Midnight,” which are pretty much the two songs that put Eric Clapton on the map. But that’s about it. So I read through a few reviews of his latest CD and quickly go the impression that he’s been in the business for many decades and is known as a “musician’s musician.” He never seemed to go for the spotlight too much but it turns out he’s been hugely influential in the rock music scene by create a style fo music known as “The Tulsa Sound.”

The Tulsa Sound is named after Tulsa, Oklahoma where the style originated. There were several other artists that helped shape the sound in addition to JJ Cale, including Rocky Frisco, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and many others.

How to describe the Tulsa Sound? I’d say smooth but with a high crackling energy. The guitar licks sting like the blues, the bass lines walk through the music and rhythm guitars nearly dominate the musical lines.

In terms of other bands besides Eric Clapton that were influenced by The Tulsa sound, you’d have to put Dire Straits at the top of the list. “Sultans of Swing” is probably hte best known example, though I have always been partial to “Roller Girl” (“toro toro taxi!”)

Here’s some examples from YouTue:

Eric Clapton and JJ Cale, “After Midnight”

Eric Clapton - Crossroads - After Midnight

“Going Down” performed by Leon Russell and JJ Cale.

“Pursuit of Happiness” performed by Rocky Frisco and JJ Cale

“Travelin Shoes” performed by Elvin Bishop

Elvin Bishop - Let It Flow - Travelin' Shoes

“Sultans of Swing” performed by Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits

Dire Straits - Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing

“Call Me The Breeze” by Lynard Skynard

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Lynyrd Skynyrd: All Time Greatest Hits - Call Me the Breeze

The Stone River Boys

Dave Gonzales was riding high with the Hacienda Brothers until co-lead singer Chris Gaffney died unexpectedly from liver cancer. Now he’s picking up the pieces and teaming up with Mike Barfield and getting back into music with a new incarnation, The Stone River Boys. Building on the “Western Soul” sound that the Hacienda Brothers were famous for, The Stone River Boys wade through the backwaters where honky tonk and soul live in the same juke box. The music is getting lots of fans and the Soner River Boys were a big hit at SXSW this year.

Leaving, TX’s CD, Late Gettin’ Started is a full-on country rocker in the same vein as Reckless Kelly or Two Cow Garage. But while you’re catching your breath from their full on wall-of-sound tracks, they will catch you by surprise with some surpisingly heartfelt ballads.
