Rotation #188 – March 30, 2009

read: http://www.taprootradio.com
webcast: http://www.live365.com/stations/taprootradio
live: Monday nights at 9pm eastern on WCOM

Howdy,

It’s been a good week for acoustic music here at Taproot Radio. First I received the most receive CD from the Bourgeois Gypsies. In my review of them I said that they do folk music about like the Grateful Dead do bluegrass. Yeah, the elements are in there, but they turn it into something all their own. Their music is something that would fit well into the Shakori Hills festival or some such.
Also this week I received the latest effort from Mary Flower. She does mostly old-time blues numbers on acoustic guitar which earned her a nomination for Acoustic Blues Artist of the year. The track that blew me away was her cover of Bix Beiderbecke’s “There Ain’t No Sweet Man That’s Worth The Salt of My Tears” a gem of a song from the 20′s.
As you can see from the Recent Adds list, I’ve finally caught up with the backlog of new music coming into Taproot Radio. I’m loving the JJ Cale, Raul Malo, and Phil Lee CDs. But the surprise of the week has to be the Naked Willie CD, which apparently is not getting overshadowed by the Willie and the Wheel CD. But I’m getting a kick out of these 60′s styled songs from Willie. Who know he could swing like Sinatra?
Don’t forget about the Taproot Theme Contest . $200 cash prize for the best rockabilly theme for the Taproot Show. Tell all your musician friends. Deadline is April 12th.
Dig Deep,
Calvin

The Bourgeois Gypsies play folk and twangy music in the same way that the Grateful Dead or Donna the Buffalo play bluegrass. Yeah, you can hear the elements of the genre in there, but that’s just a base for a sound that’s all their own. Think back porch music full of sing-along choruses and edgy riffs. Highlights for my include “Falling,” “Can’t Lose You,” and especially “The Train Song.”

Bridges is a gorgeously produced yet not over produced CD of acoustic songs that highlight Mary Flower’s acoustic guitar skills as well as her sultry blues vocals which earned her a nomination for Acoustic Blues Artist of the year. Some of her best work are instrumentals. I particularly liked “Columbia River Rag: and “Temptation Rag.” “Rhythm of the Road,” and “Big Bill Blues” are show off Flower’s talents. But the track that blew me away was her cover of Bix Beiderbecke’s “There Ain’t No Sweet Man That’s Worth The Salt of My Tears” a gem of a song from the 20′s.

This is one of those if-you-only-buy-one-cd-from-this-artist-buy-this-one CDs. 32 tracks of decdes-spanning blues, from his primitive one chord trances to his more modern stuff, you’ll be surprised how many tunes you recognize on this CD, including “Crawling King Snake,” “Boom Boom,” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer.”

Well into his 4th decade of cranking out music, JJ Cale is the blues legend you might not have ever heard of. But his latest CD, Roll On, shows us that the Tulsa Sound he invented is still as enjoyable and relevant on the current music scene as it ever was. Having influenced artists like Eric Clapton and Mark knopfler, his down tempo boogies and smooth undercurrents of energy are a signature trademark for him and are in fine display on this CD. Highlights for me included “Who Knew,” “Down To Memphis,” “Cherry Street,” “Oh Mary,” and “Roll On.”

Chris James and Patrick Rynn have been session players for a bunch of blues bands over the years and are now striking out on their own with Stop and Think About It. This is good old-fashioned blues=rock at its best. Good energy even on the slow burning tracks. Highlights for me included “You’re Gone,” “Confessin’ The Blues,” “Stop and Think About It,” and “Got To Move.”
