Tejas Brothers

Some call it “border music,” others call it Tex-Mex, norteno or conjunto. What ever you call it, these accordion driven rowdy dance hall numbers are perfect for shuffling across the dance floor. The newest troupe in this manic style of music are the Tejas Brothers and their debut, self-titled CD will get you hooked on border music. Highlights include “I Can’t Sleep,” “Love Me or Leave Me Alone,” “Sweet Lolita,” and my favorite, “Boogie Woogie Mamacita.”

Rotation #183 – January 26, 2009

live: Monday nights at 9pm eastern on WCOM

Howdy,

As of this week, I’m changing the format of the web-cast to focus on the live version of the show and as such I’ll be adding a two hour recorded show to the web cast each week. The recorded show will feature the week’s focus track rotation. So check it out at the web cast on the main site and let me know what you think.

Lucero frontman Ben Nichols has released a solo effort that’s more thematic (its based on a novel that inspired him) and dramatic than your typical wall-of-sound Lucero track. His CD, The Last Pale Light in the West is full of edgy character sketches which surprised me. But good for Ben. Nice to see him stretching himself. Now can we please have another back-to-the-wall Lucero CD too? :-)

This week’s surprise CD comes from Dave Sutherland, who hails from London. No, I don’t mean London, Kentucky, I mean London England. His CD, On The Waiting List is full of simply arranged songs with good riffs and refrains that just beg to be sung along with. Just goes to show you that Americana is not a state, it’s a state of mind.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

The Last Pale Light In The West by Ben Nichols

Lucero frontman Ben Nichols brings takes his gravel-throated vocal style that he perfected from his wall-of-sound Lucero CDs and applies it to a set of 7 songs that are more dramatic, atmospheric, and angsty. Accoring to press materials, the songs on this EP are inspired from Cormac McCarthy’s novel, “Blood Meridien.” And it’s true the songs on this album are generally ballads about heroes and ant-heroes and drifters. It often reminds me of the Don Chamber’s Zebulon release last year. Makes for a nice change of pace for Nichols, and a good CD for the rest of us who are always looking for more Lucero. “Tobin” captures an edgy dark side of the West which you don’t get very often. Other strong tracks are “The Kid,” and “Davy Brown.” But my favorite is the title track, “The Last Pale Light In The West.”

On The Waiting List by Dave Sutherland

Every now and then someone asks me if the fact that I focus on “Americana” means that I only play American artists or even southern American artists. The answer is not just “No,” it’s “Hell No!” Dave Sutherland hails from London. Not London, Kentucky, but London, England and he proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Americana is a state of mind and not a place. His latest CD, On The Waiting List, is full of simply arranged ballads with catchy hooks that beg to be sung along with at the chorus. It’s hard to pick favorites on this CD. The opening track, “Dreams About Beautiful Girls” is beautiful and bittersweet. Likewise, “Honey I’m Home,” has a world weary-sadness that has a late night sing along appeal. “Coming Apart At The Seams,” is more of a rock and roll number that coulda come from Tom Petty or, to bring it closer to home, Graham Parker. If you want simple and beautiful, try “You Got A Man Like Me Loving You.” But my favorite though is the traveling song “Roads and Rails,” which hits that blues-rock vibe just right.

Rotation #181 – January 12, 2009

Howdy,

Lots of good music going into rotation this week. First up is the latest compilation CD from KGSR in Austin Texas. They have an ongoing thing where they bring artists into their studios to perform live acoustic versions of their songs. While “live” they are recorded in such a way that there is minimal crowd noise. The result so a coffehouse singer/songwriter feel to the songs.

I’m just now getting ’round to putting Eli “Paperboy” Reed’s CD, Roll With You, into rotation. If I’d heard this one earlier in 2008 there’s no doubt in my mind I’d had it in at least the top 20 of my 2008 Best CD list. It’s nice to see folks reviving soul music.

In my review of Ryan Delmore’s CD, The Spirit The Water and The Blood, I describe the music as something you might hear if Uncle Tupelo had decided to put out a gospel CD. Think of it as “alt.gospel.” Not since “Jesus is Just Allright With Me” have I heard devotional music with such a good sense of the music of the times.

But the big news this week is the long awaited release of the Gourds new CD, Haymaker. Funny, when Blood of the Ram and Noble Creatures came out I was shocked and dismayed to hear the band going in an electric rock direction. And when I first heard Haymaker I had similar angst about them going back to a more country/twangy vibe. It’s all good and the Gourds still remain in my mind the Best Bar Band Ever.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

Haymaker by The Gourds

The Gourds continue their drunken swagger across the Americana landscape sealing their title to the Best Bar Band in America, Ever. You got your southern rock, your soul, your pop, your bluegrass, your deep south blues all in one CD with some of the strangest lyrics and catchiest riffs you’re gonna hear anywhere. While their past couple of CDs have been veering more to the rock oriented genres, this one zigs back toward country and is their twangiest CD since Cow, Fish Fowl, or Pig. Strangely enough, the first few tracks didn’t do much for me. But they hit their stride on “The Way You Can Get,” featuring Kevin Russell’s trademark full belly vocals. Jimmy Smith’s lyrics are as much a mystery as ever and yet oddly compelling, examples from this CD include the soul-styled “Luddite,” and “Blanket Show.” My other favorites are “Valentine,” and “All The Way To Jericho,” “Shreveport,” and “Bridgett.”

Our roving reporter in Austin, Mr. Phil Fritz filed this video report from the CD release show at Waterloo records in Austin yesterday. This is the Gourds performing the title track from their new release, “Haymaker”.

Thanks Phil!
