Tokyo “Toke” Rosenthal’s CD, Love Won Out is, at it’s heart, a modern, zingy blues-rock effort with occasional forays into Americana and even a hint of Latin rhythms here and there. Lots of good ballads and good times on this one. Be sure to check out the edgy, “Little Poetry Girl,” “Whos’ To Say What Might Have Been?” and most of all the title track, which is perhaps the most “blues standard” on the track and yet also the most satisfying.

What? And Give Up Show Biz? from the Asylum Street Spankers is a happy romp through the burlesque shows of yesteryear complete with bawdy repartee between songs and old time music which sounds amazingly, I dunno, I won’t say modern. But let’s say that their old time schtick somehow also seems right for the times. What has to be noted is that behind all the slapstick are some damn good musicians. I’m partial to “Everybody Loves My Baby,” “Why Do It Right?” and “Since I Met You Baby.”

According to Luke Powers, Texasee represents “a more Coen Brothers approach” to Americana. Maybe. But what’s for sure is that Texasee is a collection of unusually literate folk/Americana with a bang up set of musicians. Highlights for me are the title track and “Here Now.” But the edgier tunes such as “The Tower,” which covers the Bell Tower shooting at University of Texas at Austin, are also worth checking out.

The big musical catch this week was Lucinda Williams’ latest, Honey Bee. Building on her West CD, she has perfected the fusion of her trademark Louisianna twang and alt.country heart ache with a Los Angeles blues-rock vibe to create a stunning and beautiful collection of songs. The epitome of the fusion of her dual worlds is on the last track where she covers the AC/DC song, “It’s A Long Way To The Top.” The other heavy hitting tracks are the opener, “Real Love” and the title track, “Little Honey”. The heart breaker song on this CD is “If Wishes Were Horses.” Other highlights include “Well, Well, Well” featuring Charlie Louvin and Jim Lauderdale and a toungue-firmly-planted-in-cheek honky tonk tear jerker called “Jail House Tears” featuring Elvis Costello, which could be this generation’s answer to “Jackson” by Johnny Cash/June Carter Cash.

This week I also added a fin alt.country CD from The Lonesome Brothers, folk music from Robin and Linda Williams, and old-time music from Linda McRae.

Since 1985 the Lonesome Brothers have been digging into the edgy side of country long before the term “alt.country” was ever invented. These homespun tunes sound simple and homey and yet the still have a gritty edge to them. Great music for riding down the road. Let’s hope this isn’t really their last CD. It would be a shame to lose such a great songwriting team in Ray Mason and Jim Armenti.

Buena Vista is a beautiful collection of acoustic folk music with beautiful harmonies and weather worn string work. This collection is primarily a collection of ballads about characters in the small town of Buena Vista in rural Virginia. Highlights for me are the cover of Lefty Frizzell’s “That’s The Way Love Goes,” and the original tunes “Going, Going, Gone” and “Pretty Polly Williams.”
