The Pacific Northwest isn’t exactly the first place I think of when I think of twangy music, but Blitzen Trapper proves that not everyone up there is listening to grunge and sensitive coffee house types. They’ve got that low-fi indie-folk mentality coupled with an apparent mix-tape fascination ala Beck layered over a fascination with 70′s era country rock. I know I know. But it works for them. That’s all I can say. Check it out their latest CD, Furr.

I’ve been getting into Marc Broussard, who sorta reminds me of James Hunter only with more of a soul bent to him. Think equal parts James Hunter, Ben Harper, and Lyle Lovett. If you are into blue-eyed soul like I am, check him out.

Lastly this week, I’ve been digging into Patty Loveless’ latest CD, Sleepless nights. While the other two CDs I added this week are kinda out mixes of styles, Patty Lovless serves up beautiful and strong covers of traditional country fare from the likes of Dolly Parton, George Jones, Hank Williams and others. If you want to get yer twang on, start with her.
