Ry Cooder’s latest CD, I, Flathead is a sort of a sound track without the movie. But if you buy the deluxe edition you get a novella with it that reads like Tom Wait mixed with Ziggy Stardust. It’s about a bunch of guy who live for racing cars on salt flats out in the desert who are surprisingly cool with the idea of being joined by an extraterrestrial being. Like a good movie soundtrack the songs help tell the story, but they standalone too. All the elements you’d expect from a Ry Cooder CD are here, a ot of mariachi/border music, a fair amount of twang and slide guitar, rockabilly here and there and a big does of the blues. “Drive Like I’ve Never Been Hurt,” and “Ridin’ With The Blues” are my favorites.
Another cinematic CD came in the mail this week. If you asked a country music singer to write a sound track for the next David Lynch film, you might get something like Paul Evan’s latest CD, Aqua Noir. Equal parts angsty jazz and steel guitar, Evan’s slow paced crooning on this CD burns a deep dark groove that makes most honky tonk tear jerkers seem like this month’s pop music. At first this genre bending mix made my brain hurt but after acouple of tracks I was completely enthralled. Notable tracks include “It’s All Or Nothin’,” and “Her Lonely Forgotten.” But the stand out tracks are “The Screamin’ Hollar Inn,” and “As I Cry My Broekn Heart To Sleep.”
Rebecca Lynn Howard gives Reba McEntire a run for her money on her latest CD, No Rules. And Emmylou purs her heart out in a lush, beautiful CD, All I Intended To Be. I really like her “Broken Man’s Lament.” The refrain chokes me up every time.
