Can’t remember if I mentioned thme last week, but there’s a new duo called Birds and Arrows making the coffee house acoustic bar circuit in Chapel Hill. I caught them at the Open Eye Cafe a couple of weeks ago and was muchly impressed with their music. Andrea Nell plays guitar and Pete Connolly plays drums. They both share singing and songwriting duties. Their signature tune right now seems to be “Ghost Of A Bad Idea.” But I also like “Move Along” and “Let It Fall.” Watch your local listings and check them out when you get a chance.
This week I also added yet another Dan Penn album to the backfill. Do Right Man is a fanastic colection of stripped down, slowed downsoul songs, including Do Right Woman of course. I heard him once say that the James Carr version of “Dark End Of The Street” is the way the song was meant to be done. But Penn’s cover is darn good too.
