Howdy,

The long awaited (at least by me anyway) Shelby Lynn tribute to Dusty Springfield, Just a Little Lovin’, is out and was worth the wait. The title track alone is worth the price of a CD. She doesn’t just bring a new appreciation of Dusty Springfield, she transcends Dusty Springfield. Her pure, sweet, feminine voice is perfectly accompanied by clear, subdued arrangements that recall torch singers of yesteryear. We’re going to be hearing a lot from this CD over the next few months on Taproot Radio.

The James McMurty CD, Just Us Kids, is out too. And while I’m diggin’ it, I can’t say that it’s blown me away. But “Bayou Tortous,” “Hurricane Party,” and “You’d A Thought” can be put on repeat and listened to over and over again.

What did blow me away this week was a 2006 CD I received in the mail from Eric Hisaw, called The Crosses. I hear strains of Peter Case, Elvis Costello, and Grateful Dead and he’s a top notch songwriter. “Peggy” and “Take Care of Yourself” and good examples of his songwriting strength. He tells me he has another CD coming out Real Soon Now. I hope so.

Lastly but not leastly, I got a CD from the Brighton, UK based Mountain Firework Company. You won’t find a better back-porch music band than these old-time string players. They write songs that just beg to be sung along with.

With their latest CD, Samurai, The Mountain Firework Company continues their folk music tradition with back-porch feel-good music that begs to be sung along with. My favorites are “Rolling River,” “Lamp Down Low,” ‘Samurai,” “Sad Stories,” and “Guardian Angel.”

One of the things that marks a top notch songwriter is being able to write a slow moving song that keeps the listener’s interest from beginning to end and Eric Hisaw passes this test with Flying Colors. Eric Hisaw’s CD, The Crosses, sounds like its cut from the same cloth as Ray Wylie Hubbard but in more of a back porch music sort of way. You also hear tinges of the Grateful Dead, Elvis Costello and Peter Case. Highlights include, “Take Care Of Yourself,” “Peggy,” “Borrow,” “Run,” and “Right Now.”

Shelby Lynn’s long anticipated tribute CD to Dusty Springfield, Just A Little Lovin’, is finally here and it was well worth the wait. Not only does she faithfully recreate all the Dusty Springfield style, she transcends it, making these soul classics fresh and full of life like they’ve not been in decades. My only dissapointment is that she didn’t cover “Son Of A Preacher Man.” But there are many good songs on this CD including “Willie And Laura Mae Jones,” “Just A Little Lovin’” which blew me away, “I Only Want To Be With You,” “The Look of Love,” and “I Don’t Want To Hear It Any More.”

Update: An anonymous reader pointed out to me that I had my facts exactly backwards, which is that it was Ray Wylie Hubbard who covered James McMurty’s Choctaw Bingo. D’oh! I hate it when I screw up. In any case, those two are cut from the same cloth.

Last year James McMurtry released a cover of Ray Wylie Hubbard’s “Choctaw Bingo,” and I knew right then the next CD he releasaed would have that Hubbard influence to it. Sure enough, Just Us Kids combines McMurtry’s top notch song writing, with a heavy, smoky, electric sound that Hubbard has perfected. Highlights for me include the opening track “Bayou Tortous,” “Just Us Kids,” “Freeway View,” “Ruby and Carlos,” and “You’d A Thought.”

Howdy,

I had the good fortune to attend a house concert featuring Dexter Romweber. That boy sure knows how to bang on a guitar in a surf-punk-rockabilly sort of way. There’s a documentary coming about about him and his Flat Duo Jets days and this week I added the companion CD into rotation.

During his show, Dexter talked about how one of his favorite LPs was the Jerry Lee Lewis 1964 performance at the Star Club in Hamburg Germany and I thought to myself, “Great Balls Of Fire! I don’t have any Jerry Lee Lewis on Taproot Radio!!!” So this week I fixed that. Turns out that LP has been reissued on CD and it’s great. Just about every track is going into backfill.

Also this week I got in the mail a CD from Joe Pug. You may remember him because the was at UNC for a few years doing the diploma thing until he decided that music is where he wanted to go. Check out his new EP going into rotation.

Finally, don’t forget to tune in to the live show webcast on Monday night from 9-11pm Eastern Time.

Joe Pug is a Chicago based carpenter by day, singer/songwriter by night. Sometimes he works with a full electric band, sometimes he has a more pared down orchestration. But for him the song lyrics are always the key elements. Highlights for me were “Call It What You Will,” “Speak Plainly, Diana,” and “Nation Of Heat.”
