I knew that Jesse Sykes was essentially a folk singer, but I wasn’t prepared for just how dramatic and serious her songs are. Very involved imagery in the lyrics and a highly unusual singing style. It’s like her music belongs to a different age when people were seriously trying to change the world. Jesse Sykes is the Kate Bush of the indie-folk scene. Highlights fro me are “You Might Walk Away,” “How Will We Know,” and especially “Station Gray,” and “I Like The Sound.”
Levon Helms digs into the hardscrabble and and pulls out sustenance for the soul with his songs of hard times and tough souls. I tend to favor the old-time ballads like “Little Birds,” “The Girl I Left Behind,” “The Mountain.” I also like the imagery on “Calvary” and “Feelin’ Good.”
Just when I think (yet again) I done with rock and roll, kaput, I stumble across a band that makes it fun again. This time it’s the Ike Reilly Assassination and in addition to the usual sex, drugs, rock’n'roll formula these guys mix in gospel choruses, soldiers going off to war, road trips to Juarez. and labor unrest to the mix. The title track, “We Belong To The Staggering Evening” is a signature rock anthem if ever there was one. “Valentine’s Day in Juarez” is an ode to decadence and “Let’s Get Friendly” covers the joys of shallow relationships. But probably my favorite is the gospel tinged ode to drugs, “8 More Days Til The Fourth Of July.”
When I audition CDs for the Taproot Radio rotation, I try my best to give every song a fair listen while at the same time getting the good stuff into the play list just as soon as possible. Sometimes this means that I don’t fully grok the beauty, niftiness, or coolness of a song until it’s well into rotation and I’ve listened to a song a dozen times or so. But after a couple of initial listens, I can usually decide whether a song should go into rotation or not. Most of the time, a song that makes it into rotation grows on my more and more with each listen.
Most of the time.
The problem is that sometimes I don’t fully comprehend all the lyrics of a song on the the first few listens and sometimes a song makes it on to the play list with really stupid lyrics. Sometimes a song makes it onto the play list with offensive lyrics.
I’m not going to try to define “offensive.” I’m just gonna say that I know it when I hear it. It’s not just a matter or eliminating a few words here and there. That’s often a pretty god triage device. But I’ve marked songs as off limits before even though they didn’t use any of the obvious forbidden words.
The reason this is on my mind is that this past week, I put a song into rotation that had a really bad word in it. I mean one of the Really Bad Words. It was online for about three days before I noticed it and I took it off rotation as soon as I could.
I can’t guarantee that mistakes like this will never happen. I make some reasonable efforts and keeping the Really Bad Words off my station but as this week proved to me, it’s going to happen every now and then.
What I can guarantee is that I’ll quickly address any Really Bad issues that show up on either on the Live 365 station or the on-the-air show at WCOM. So please, if you hear something that is Really Bad in terms of offensiveness on Taproot Radio, please let me know via e-mail at feedback@taprootradio.com.
And if you hear a song on Taproot Radio that’s reall bad just because you think it’s stupid or crappy or boring, well, I want to hear that too.

I know it stretches the imagination a bit, but there’s an indie-folk band in Seattle that sounds like a cross between Kings of Leon and Iron and Wine. They are called the Cave Singers and they are wonderful. As I listen to this trio of folk-hipsters the words that keep running through my mind are mournful, wistful, and soulful. And oh yeah, beautiful too, sorta. They’re going into rotation this week.

I just read that the independent record store Dusty Groove is setting up it’ sown reissue label and will be reissuing classic soul records. This can’t be anything but good news. Probably half the soul CDs in my collection came from that store and I can’t wait to hear what they start putting out.

Was glad to see that Dave Insley has a new CD out. His voice always reminds me of Willie Nelson somehow. but rather than outlaw songs, he sings in the spirit of cowboy westerns. On his latest CD though there’s a little honky tonk and even a country-soul crossover which comes of pretty darn good.
With all the good music coming out I’ve been neglecting the backfill the past few months. But last week I bought the Charlie Feathers compilation, Get With It. Wow. Talk about stepping back in time. As you listen to the tracks in chronological order you can elmost hear the evolution of early rockabilly being developed from one song to the next. Lots of tracks from this set will be going into rotation.
