Levon Helms digs into the hardscrabble and and pulls out sustenance for the soul with his songs of hard times and tough souls. I tend to favor the old-time ballads like “Little Birds,” “The Girl I Left Behind,” “The Mountain.” I also like the imagery on “Calvary” and “Feelin’ Good.”
