Crowded Is The New Lonely by Sara Cox

On her latest CD, Crowded is the New Lonely, Sara Cox sings with that strong/vulnerable duality that reminds me of Gillian Welch and Roseann Cash. Her voice is just a little bit twangy without being kitschy. Her songs are grounded in the hear and now and would be perfect in just about any coffee shop across the country. While she has an excellent backing band, her tantalizing voice and acoustic guitar are at the center of every song. I really enjoyed, “Be My Man,” “Busted Symphony,” and “Title and Deed.” But the stand out track by far is “The Fog.”

Part honky-tonk, part country rock, served up with good natured gusto. I like the fact that this is a live recording because it keeps the music from being over-produced into saccharine fluff. If you’re looking for two-step music you can respect, Grant Langston and the Supermodels are the band for you. Highlights include “Baby, It’s Raining,” “Prove Them Wrong,” “Walk Of Shame,” “Take The Devil Out Of Me,” and “Thank You Baby For Breaking My Heart.”

Marah delivers their most thematic album yet. I wish I could sum it up in one pithy soundbite but I really can’t quite say what the theme is. But the songs are filled with angels and devils and destruction and redemption. But fear not the rock has all the here and now street cred and raw honesty. we’ve come to know and expect from Marah. Highlights include “Coughing Up Blood,” “Old Times Ticking Away,” and “Songbirds.” But the stand out track for me is “Wild West Love Song.”

With the new DBTs line-up they’ve been expanding their musical scope. Shonna Tucker (finally!) takes the lead on several songs and the crew builds out from their deeply entrenched southern gothic rock base into twangier directions with songs like “Lisa’s Birthday” and bluesier directions with my personal favorite, “Goode’s Field Road.” Other highlighs include “3 Dimes Down”,

Howdy,

I am super excited about adding the new Malcolm Holcombe CD, Gamblin’ House, into Taproot’s roation this week. Malcolm Holcombe has been around the block more than a few times and it shows in his music. He writes songs that sound like traditional folk music at first, acoustic, twangy, simple, banjos, fiddles. But when Malcolm Holcombe screams his song “Evelyn” you know this isn’t a guy just performing songs to make a buck, he getting something out of his system, something that’s deeply universal like a message from an oracle at the top of Black Mountain in the North Carolina Appalachians. He’s all over the place in terms of musical style. He can do quiet and simple. He can do rage. But Malcolm Holcombe delivers his songs with such drive and passion you can’t call it anything other than rock. There’s many strong songs on this CD but the highlights for me are “good times,” “Goin’ Downtown,” “Evelyn,” “Cynthia Margaret,” and “the shade.”

The Marah CD comes into rotation next week.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

Two Dollar Pistols Hanging Up Their Hats

Was very sad to hear today that The Two Dollar Pistols will be going their separate ways sometime in 2008. In my review of their latest CD, Here Tomorrow, Gone Today, I mentioned that this is the band, above all others, that taught me that it was OK to like country music. No really, it’s OK. I don’t need to dress it up with an alt- prefix or pretend it’s country rock. If the twang moves you, then it’s good.

I’ll always have the Two Dollar Pistols to thank for that and they will be missed, but not forgotten as long as I’m broadcasting Taproot Radio.

If I understand correctly, Bettye LaVette has never won a Grammy, but this may be her year I just noticed that her 2007 release, The Scene Of The Crime, has been nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Blues Album.

Long time listeners of the live Taproot show on WCOM will know that I’m a huge fan of this CD, It’s got a killer backing band from Spooner Oldham and members of the Drive By Truckers and never has there been a set of songs that show case her gritty, tough as nails style any better.

May the Grammy Gods smile upon her this year!

Makar’s CD, 99 Cent Dreams can probably be best described as alt-folk-pop-punk. You’ll be wanting to snap your fingers and bang your head at the same time. Check out “I Hate My Job,” “What Can I Tell You,” and “Honey-Colored Time.”
