Howdy,

If there’s any CD out there that can be described as both “lo fi” and “lush” at the same time, it would the Shepherd’s Dog by Iron and Wine. Think of a cross between Devandra Banhart and Ray LaMontagne. The opening track, “Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car,” has rythm line and bass that sounds like it came straight out of a session in the garage, On top of that are layers and layers of experimental folk instrumentation. There’s lots of screechy fiddles that don’t try to annoy but capture subtle excitement and gentle backing vocals the float in and out like ghosts passing through. Iron and Wine’s best effort yet.

By contrast, Pieta Brown sticks to more tried and true arrangements and song forms. But that’s way OK because she knows how to reach into your heart with her voice and squeeze hard. Remember the Sun is her latest CD and well worth a listen.

Life has gotten in the way the way this week and I haven’t added any new CDs to the station nor have I added anything into backfill.

The November Top 20 CDs are posted online here. No big surprise that the Gourds are topping the list as I’ve still been playing at least one track a week from Noble Creatures. Avett Brothers still strong as well. Been working on my best of 2007 list and it’s really tough this year even after expanding to a Top 20 instead of a Top 10.

Backsliders, SCOTS, and the Vibekillers all have shows coming up this week. So forget the Christmas shopping and go support your live music scene.
