Howdy,

It’s been another good week for me on the music front. I got my hands on the latest Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings CD. This third CD from Sharon seems to be just a touch mellower than her previous two and it shows that she can tug at your heart strings as well as blow you away with the sheer power of her voice and charisma. So it’s a good rounding out of her previous efforts and there’s still plenty of music the move too. I think my favorite is “Let Them Knock” For a nice slow burn check out “Nobody’s Baby”. And for a a great gospel tune, check out “Answer Me.”

If you were a PR flack inventing fictitious character backgrounds for the perfect Americana Star, you couldn’t write a narrative any better than Ryan Bingham’s. According to his press kit, he grew up in rural Texas doing ranch work in the wilds. Basically lived on his own from an early age. Did the rodeo circuit for a while, often sleeping in the bed of his pickup. Learned to play guitar from a neighbor who played mariachi. Influenced by Dylan, Marshal Tucker, and Bob Wills. Eventualy got a gig in a bar and then hit the big time. The result is his debut on Lost Highway records called Mescalito and the thing that impesses me the most about this music is that it’s basically a rock CD. Not a single honky tonk or Texas swing tune on the entire CD as far as I can tell. There’s all the trappings of a country band there. Mandolin, slide guitar, some occasional harmonica. But even so, I wouldn’t even call this CD a “country rock” CD. I’d just call it a rock CD set in Texas. Maybe the production help from Marc Ford had something to do with it. I really got into the opening track, “Southside of Heaven” because the band actually had the nerve to pause and change tempos in a song. I also really liked “Bread and Water” and “Borracho Station.” But the stand out track that’s gonna make the heavy rotation lists has got to be “Travelin Jones.”

I recently heard of a Danish band called Powersolo because they are touring with Heavy Trash whose latest CD I’ve been playing over and over. These guys have a similar sound, perhaps even rawer and definitely raunchier than Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray’s show. I’m a sucker for this stuff. I just wish I could figure out what to call it. psychobilly-meltdown?

As always, the full rotation is online at the web site.

Howdy,

Talk about firing on all cylinders, the Deadstring Brothers (and sister) flat out rawk half a dozen different ways on their new CD, Silver Mountain. Naysayers shake their hands and label them Rolling Stones rip-offs. But if they are derivative it’s from the entire southern music arcana including the blues, soul, and swamp rock traditions. So I’d rather think of them as distilling all that is good and righteous in southern music, which is amusing given the fact that they are (I think) based Detroit. Go figure.

Good Lord it’s a banner week for local music here in Raleigh, NC, where Barney Fife goes to party. The Hideaway scores a double hitter with Malcolm Holcombe and The Hacienda Brothers on Two consecutive nights. And Bobby Bare Jr. and Lucero are visiting us right here in the Paris of the Piedmont with a show at The Cat’s Cradle on the 29th.

This week’s happy surprise in the mail was Sol Creech’s latest effort Volume: Blues. Reminds me a lot of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with more emphasis on the Urban attitude mixed in with the old school blues riffs. A very good CD for, uh, what’s the word? Chillin’?

Dig Deep,
Calvin

Howdy,

Yes, Yes, I know it’s been a whole week but now you finally get to hear another installment of the Taproot Radio Show. Tonight’s show is completely up in the air. I did zero pre-planning of tonights’ show. I just rummaged through my “heavy rotation pile” at home and filled a bag with CDs. So tune in and listen to an under-slept, over caffeinated Calvin stumble his way through two hours of the grittiest roots music you can shake a stick at. Locals can tune n to 103.5FM in Carrboro and everyone else can tune into the webcast at www.communityradio.coop .

Speaking of nailing the delivery, the opening track of Bettye LaVette’s latest CD, Scene Of The Crime, gave me goose bumps the first time I heard it. I had big fears about this CD. There’s been a run of CD’s lately where up and coming artists produced CDs of legends, with very mixed results. I thought the Ryan Adams produced Willie Nelson CD, Songbird, was a big success. But the Jack White produced Loretta Lynn CD, Van Lear Rose didn’t quite gel despite very good work by both parties. So when I heard that Bettye LaVette’s latest CD was produced by Patterson Hood of the Drive By Truckers, I was skeptical. I didn’t see how the Southern Gothic Rock sound was going to work with Bettye LaVettes’ soul.

But as it turned out, the band morphed themselves to fit her style and delivery and I’m happy to say that the CD is very strong and I highly recommend it.

I hadn’t been keeping up with Ben Harper since the CD he put out with the Blind Boys of Alabama a couple of years ago. So I popped his latest CD, Lifeline, into my player with little to no expectations and was immediatley captivated by his soul-baring delivery. By far my favorite track on the CD is “Fool For A Lonesome Train,” which perhaps doesn’t break any new ground in terms of format for soul songs. But he nails the delivery unlike so many other soul/r&b singers today. This week’s video is a live acoustic version he did as part of a press interview.

Seems you can’t turn around in the alt.country world these days with out running into something about Fionn Regan. He played ACL Fest. He’s been covered in No Depression. Lots of ads out for him. Lost Highway is promoting him big time, bragging about how he’s the first European person to be signed to their label. Whatever. The narrative is great. Young. Good Looking in a scruffy way. And he’s _Irish_ for God’s sake, which some how automagically confers cool points on him. But what about the music? Curiosity finally got the best of me and I plunked down money to buy his CD, The End Of History. My verdict? Jury’s still out for a few years. The End Of History, is full of sensitive singer/song writer material. He sounds like a very very very young James Taylor with maybe just a tinge of Ryan Adams which I suspect is what Lost Highway is really aiming at. The thing is, when he sets his mind to it. he’s got good talent with the guitar. The opening track, Be Good or Be Gone, has some beautiful, complex, delicate string work that commnands as much attention as his voice. And there are a couple of tracks that also have great guitar work. But there are also quite a few strum-along-while-I-show-you-how-sensitive-I-am songs. Soooooo I dunno. I’m just gonna say the boy has potential and leave it at that.

I bet Malcolm Holcombe could start his own cult in the North Carolina mountains. The man sounds like someone who’s had a vision and his songs feel like gospel. His latest 5 song EP, Wager, take his voice even more over the edge than Not Forgotten. And yes, the songs sound like they come from deep Appalachia, but they are so grounded in human experience that you can relate to them no matter where you are from. Another good trait for a cult leader. Every single song on the EP deserves air play but the stand out track is “I Feel Like A Train.”

I like country music. There. I said it. Plain and simple. No sense in trying to hide behind trendy alt. prefixes. No sense in hiding behind “outlaw country”. I’m just going to go on record as being a country music fan. The band that gave me the courage to admit it is The Two Dollar Pistols. Their latest CD, Here Tomorrow, Gone Today, has everything that used to make country music meaningful and soulful before it got air-brushed into self parody. John Howie Jr’s lyrics push all the right buttons and when his voice his plunges to Junior Brown depths of bass you can’t help but get the religion. There’s so many good tracks on this CD it’s hard to pick favorites but if pressed I’d choose “When It Was Over,” “Stranger Things Have Happened,” “Tortured Mind,” “Here Tomorrow Gone Today,” “I Don’t Know You (But I Don’t Like You),” “Were You Pushed (Or Did You Fall).”
