Howdy,

I hadn’t been keeping up with Ben Harper since the CD he put out with the Blind Boys of Alabama a couple of years ago. So I popped his latest CD, Lifeline, into my player with little to no expectations and was immediatley captivated by his soul-baring delivery. By far my favorite track on the CD is “Fool For A Lonesome Train,” which perhaps doesn’t break any new ground in terms of format for soul songs. But he nails the delivery unlike so many other soul/r&b singers today. This week’s video is a live acoustic version he did as part of a press interview.

Speaking of nailing the delivery, the opening track of Bettye LaVette’s latest CD, Scene Of The Crime, gave me goose bumps the first time I heard it. I had big fears about this CD. There’s been a run of CD’s lately where up and coming artists produced CDs of legends, with very mixed results. I thought the Ryan Adams produced Willie Nelson CD, Songbird, was a big success. But the Jack White produced Loretta Lynn CD, Van Lear Rose didn’t quite gel despite very good work by both parties. So when I heard that Bettye LaVette’s latest CD was produced by Patterson Hood of the Drive By Truckers, I was skeptical. I didn’t see how the Southern Gothic Rock sound was going to work with Bettye LaVettes’ soul.

But as it turned out, the band morphed themselves to fit her style and delivery and I’m happy to say that the CD is very strong and I highly recommend it.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

Howdy all,

So my day job has interfered with my usual routine for the station because I’ve been on the road. I’ve been able to upload a new set of tracks for the live 365 rotation, but I am unable to publish the rotation list this week.

Highlights for this week include more new music from Heavy Trash’s new CD, Going Way Out With Heavy Trash.

Also check out the new single from the Hoodoo Hounds called “Castle In The Cumberland”.

I just wrapped up my third year of Austin City Limits Festival and this was the best year so far for me. Partly I think it’s because I’m learning the tricks of how to survive three Texas summer days in a park and partly it’s because the weather in Austin has been unusually mild this year. There’s actual flowing water in all of the creeks that are normally dry this time of year. And Oh yeah, the bands were better than ever.

3 Days, 8 stages, 130 bands. You can do the math. There were hard choices to make in every time slot and honestly some times I chose to see a band simply because it meant that I didn’t have to get out of my chair and spoil my finely honed note-taking position:

In the spirit of encouraging others to venture out to music festivals, I’ll offer a few tips I’ve collected over the past three years:

1) Put yourself on a drinking schedule.
It’s not enough to say, “stay hydrated.” With the constant musical distractions it’s easy to keep putting it off and next thing you know you’re passing out. Look at the schedule and plan your water drinking just as if it were one of the blocks of time on the schedule. This same principle applies to beer.

2) Electrolytes are your friend
For some strange reason, ACL Fest won’t let you bring any drinks into the gate other than water. And water is very nice. But it doesn’t replace your electrolytes. They won’t let you bring gatorade in or anything like that. So my friend and fellow ACL-mate Phil came up with the brilliant idea of taking packets of Electro-mix in with us to mix in with the bottled water we took.

3) Sunscreen
Everyone talks about the importance of sunscreen. But two things to keep in mind is that you need to reapply it fairly often. It’s not a apply once for the day and forget it type deal. Also, schedule sunscreen applying around opportunities to wash your hands. Or, at least, bring a towel or something to wipe away the sunscreen gunk from your hand when done.

4) Artificial Shade
If the festival allows it, bring a small folding umbrella with you. And don’t be afraid to use it. Serenely ignore any “girly-man” comments from your fellow festival attendees. They are only jealous that they didn’t think of it.

5) Travel Light
Think of yourself as one of those aborigines in the outback who has to travelo 20 miles in the desert every day just to find enough food to live to the next day. You don’t want to haul anything that isn’t absolutely necessary. Water in particular is heavy. So while you want to keep water handy, you don’t want to be carrying anymore than necessary to carry you over to the next opportunity to get more.

By following these simple rules I was able to have a blast at ACL Fest and emerge at the end of the three days a bit scruffy and tired, but completely psyched up by the music and blissfully non-burned.

A couple of other nuggets of wisdom learned at ACL Fest
— Buy the t-shirt early. The good ones run out fast.
— If you smell vomit, don’t sit on the grass
— The beautiful women are more likely to dance at the soul bands than the rock bands

And finally, best T-Shirt spotted at ACL Fest said:

Kama Sutra Now
Ibuprofen Later

Now on to the Band Notes…….

Friday:

Missed the Heartless Bastards and Will Hoge because vacation mode kicked in and I was moving kinda slow on Friday.

Dynamites featuring Charles Walker
Got to the festival just in time to catch the the end of the Dynamites show. High energy gospel-like soul. Charles Walker has been recording soul music since the 60’s on the Decca and Chess labels and has been “big in Europe” as they say but not so much in the USA and this sorely needs to be corrected. I’m gonna track down some of their CDs and start featuring them on the show.

Manchester Orchestra
I mostly saw Manchester Orchestra because I wanted a good seat for JJ Grey and Mofro who were the next band at the same stage. Their an Atlanta based rock group that’s most often compared to Death Cab For Cutie. They sounded good, but just Not My Thing, so to speak.

JJ Grey and Mofro
Paying for the air ticket, making my way through the Austin Bus system, then the ACL Fest shuttle bus queues and then jockeying for a good spot to sit near the sound booth, and sweating bullets in 95 degree weather all completely faded into the background when the keyboards blasted out the opening chords of “Brighter Day” from their first CD. JJ Grey and Mofro delivered song after song of southern blues-rock goodness including “How Junior Got His Head Put Out,” “Footsteps,”Lochloosa,” “Country Ghetto,” ‘War” and they closed with a rousing 7 minute gospel-like rendition of “The Sun Shining Down.”

James Hunter:
While all the kids were running off to see Queens of the Stone Age and Spoon, those in the know went to see James Hunter. His blue-eyed soul night club sound came across remarkably well in the open air festival setting and quite a few couples were dancing to his music. The thing I liked about his show is that he extended all the songs to be 5-7 minutes long which really gave the band a chance to show off and the whole thing came across feeling like a big-stage Ray Charles show best exemplified by their cover of The Five Royales’ “Baby Don’t Do It”. The Five Royales’ were a Winston-Salem based soul band from the 50’s/60’s so there was a North Carolina connection as well. The band also played a new song of theirs called “Class Act.”

Rev. Horton Heat
The last show I recorded on Friday night was the Rev. Horton Heat. You hear pretty much all the same songs at any given Rev. Horton Heat show, but like any good church service, the point is not to hear something new but to share the inspiration and that’s what we got. I didn’t quite catch all the songs in their set list, but some of the songs were “Baddest of the Bad, “Wiggle Stick,” “Callin’ In Twisted,” “Indigo Friends,” “400 bucks,” a surf-guitar version of “Greensleeves,” Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” a psycho-billy version of Ozzy Osborne’s “Crazy Train,” and they closed with an extended version of my favorite, “Big Red Rocket of Love.”

Saturday

Raul Malo
Raul Malo is most famous for his work in the Mavericks, but the main vibe you get from him is Big Band croner, maybe with just a hint of latin showmanship thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately I only got about a half minute sample of one of his songs.
2007aclfest-RaulMalo.MP3

Paolo Nutini
Paolo Nutini hails from the UK and sounds to me like part James Hunter and part Ray LaMontagne. There’s a soul R&B base there but it sounds very current. He’s definitely on my listen-to-more list. His big single right now is “New Shoes.”
2007aclfest-nutini-shoes.MP3

Sarah Hickman
Sarah Hickman strikes me as a prototypical folk-rock singer, though maybe more instrumentation than you usually get with folk singers. Heady, idealistic lyrics full of fervor about, uh, well, fervor about something. I found out later that she’s done lots of children’s albums before moving into adult music, which I think explains a lot about her sound.
2007aclfest-hickman.MP3

Cold War Kids
The ACL Fest program entry for Cold War Kids claims that “the Kids emulate both the Band’s sound and Bob Dylan’s.” Heh. Maybe on their CDs. But I sure didn’t hear it in their ACL fest performane. They sound to me more like the typical angst driven indie rock band. That wouldn’t be so bad except that I went into the show with such misplaced expectations that I didn’t enjoy the music until I told myself to get over it.
2007aclfest-coldwarkids.MP3

Blue October
Blue October is a Houston-based rock band that’s making a name for themselves. There press materials name check Peter Gabriele and Depeche Mode, which I think is fair. but I have to say I didn’t give them a fair listen. After Cold War Kids I’d had quite enough angsty rock.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
I really wanted to like this Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Their band name is border-line brilliant. Where to start. I give them credit for creating very sophisticated multi-layered sound-scapes which manage to hint at a New Age feel. But you can still dance and, yeah, clap your hands to it. So that’s good. But it cam across as too intellectual for my tastes. Or maybe it’s best to say, after sitting all day in the broiling sun my brain was too fried to fully appreciate them.
2007aclfest-clap.MP3

Muse

The headliner for Saturday night was supposed to be The White Stripes, but they canceled. But the crowd didn’t seem to notice because Muse kept everyone entertained and mesmerized. High energy techno kinda sound but with more melody than you usually get with techno bands. Guitar work that seems more designed to generate appealling white noise than anything else and of course vocals that sound like they are coming from another world. Add to it a light show that could have come from a science fiction movie. Clearly the crowd favorite of the festival.

Sunday

The Jones Family Singers
I got to the festival late on Sunday and had just enough time to catch the end of The Jones Family Singers. The best gospel music does not preach at you but instead is a way for the singers to testify to what they feel. It’s the classic show, don’t tell. And they definitely testified to their faith in this show and they knew their audience too, throwing in secular tunes as well. Funny thing about the music is that it’s somewhat unremarkable but it builds up over time to something happy and infectious.
2007aclfest-jones.MP3

Broken West
I checked out Broken West because they are signed to Chapel Hill’s Merge Records and because they’d been favorably compared to Spoon. Not sure I buy that, but they do have a good indie rock sound.
2007aclfest-broken.MP3

Robert Earl Keen
Having been a big fan of REK for a while, I knew I would enjoy his show. But I was surprised at how much I really got into this show. Better than any other artist at ACL Fest, he managed to create a low-key, back-porch, just playing music for fun vibe.
2007aclfest-rek.MP3

Charlie Musselwhite
Charlie Musselwhite gets the ACL Fest award for the most over-crowded show. They had him playing at the WaMu tent and number of people jostling for a chance to cram into the tent and get even a tiny glimpse of him was staggering. I have to admit I don’t know much a bout him. I know he’s famous in the Blues scene, mostly as a harminica player who’s toured with everyone from Muddy Waters to Mavis Staples, to Howlin’ Wolf.
2007aclfest-musselwhite.MP3

Patterson Hood
Patterson Hood gave the most surprising performance of Sunday as far as I’m concerned. I expcted a DBTs-lite show but instead it was him with an acoustic guitar and two guys from Centromatic (I didn’t catch the names) one on electric guitar and the other on keyboards/fiddle. And his show almost had a singer/songwriter feel to it. They did covers some DBTs material of which my favorite was an acoustic version of “Heathens” which gave me a new-found appreciation of the brillance of the lyrics. Hood also played several songs from his upcoming CD, Murdering Osacar (and other love songs), which he created with members of Centromatic.
2007aclfest-hood.MP3

Wilco
No body does the dissonant, fill the park with a wall of sound thing better than Wilco. But their latest CD, Sky Blue Sky also has long melodic soft rock stretches that counter-balance the heavier parts and it sounded great on the big stage.
2007aclfest-wilco.MP3

Bob Dylan
I guess the main thing that can be said of the Dylan show was that it was exactly, and I mean exactly, what you would expect based on other Dylan shows in the past. It was the other end of the spectrum from the Muse show the previous night. There was no “show”. There was literally no lighting effects until the encore. Just plain basic stage lights. That went off between songs. There were only about two or three camera shots in the whole thing. And they were all group ensemble shots. I don’t think there was a single close up of Dylan all night.

Of course the vocal style was as unintelligible as always. It’s almost like Dylan has seen so many imitators that he has to get even more extreme just to differentiate himself from all the Dylan clones out there. But honestly, there were many songs which you would not have been able to understand the words unless you already knew the song. Musically, the songs were great as always. He does have a strong backing band. But every song was an ensemble productions. There was almost nothing in the way of solo work and like I said, no close up shots.

Combine all this together and the kiddies, who are used to MTV and had been hypnotized by Muse the night before, were bored. After 20 minutes they were streaming away from the stage. But toward the end of the show the music got stronger and stronger and the encore, which consisted of “Thunder On The Mountain,” “Like A Rolling Stone,” and “I Shall Be Released,” was fantastic.

Howdy,

OK, I’ll admit that I’m late to the party on this one, but I just want to say that Eilen Jewell is great! I bought her Letters From Sinners and Strangers this week and have pretty much been listening to it constantly. She she has that jazzy/bluesy thing going kinda like the Squirrel Nut Zippers but she puls in more roots influence. In a lot of ways she reminds me of The Little Willies. Anyway, I hope she comes to the area sometime soon.

I also love the ragged edge on Peter Case’s Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John. And I expected the new Lyle Lovett CS, It’s Not Big It’s Large, to have a very smooth jazzy sound to it, which many tracks did, but there were also quite a few edgier tracks on the CD is well which was a pleasant surprise. All in all a good week for new music!

I’m heading out to Austin for the Austin City Limits Festival this week. I’ve got my recorder all ready to go and lots of extra batteries so hopefully this time next week I’ll have lots of show recordings to share.

Dig Deep,
Calvin

Howdy,

Lots of additions to the music library this week. The big find was a rare recording of a live show done in Houston in 1961 headlined by Johnny Cash but featuring a then-up-and-coming guy by the name of Roger Miller! Great show! I’ll be working in tracks from this show into rotation over the next few weeks.

I’ve been in traveling in Asia this week for my day job and managed to carve out a couple of days of vacation in Tokyo. Of course I’ve been prowling through every record store I can find. So far I’ve only found new music stores and I’m still looking for a used store. But it’s been interesting to see what they are and aren’t selling on the twangy front. I’ve seen several modern folk types on the sheves and some soul acts such as Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. The pleasant surprise is that Rockabilly is fairly popular and my big find today awas Brian Setzer’s released called 13, in a prominent end-cap display with a hand written recommendation sign next two it obviously written by a store employee. Pretty impressive considering that the CD came out in 2006. I have to say though that it distresses me to see how big an influence rap still is on the pop culture here. Sigh.

Dig Deep,
Calvin
