Howdy,

Sometimes I forget in this global village that there is still such a thing as a regional act. Case in point, I recently read an article by a music writer that I respect quite a bit andin he article he expressed surprise that an “unknown” act like the Avett Brothers had reeived nomination for an AMA award. Now, I could handle a music writer questioning whether they are good enough to receive a nomination or not, relative to the other artists that are out there. But I was kinda shocked to see him call them “unknown”. Heck, they’ve been on Conan, what more does it take to become a national household name? Because in NC, the Avett Brothers have a fiercly loyal following and are by some accounts the Next Big Thing among the twangy set. So if you’re not in NC or you’re unfamiliar with the Avett Brothers, do your self a favor and watch their video on the Taproot web site and go listen to their songs. I’d dearly like to get them over the regional act.

A heat wave and drought is gripping most of North Carolina, pretty soon I’ll have to be doing dust bowl tribute shows and Hooverville shows. It’s not quite that bad yet, but sometimes I wonder…… Speaking of hot, one of my new favorite picks of 2007 is Brian Setzer’s Red Hot and Live CD. If your only exposure to Brian Setzer is his “Stray Cats”stuff you should a) find it in your heart to forgive him. It was the 80′s. It was MTV’s hey day. Everyone was doing it. and b) you should check out his post Stray Cats work. Very true, authentic sounding rockabilly.

As I was eagerly placing my order for the new Budos Band CD this week, it got me to thinking of other great intrumental bands which inevitably led me to Booker T and the MGs. I did a bit of prowling on YouTube and was surprised at how many videos there are of them out there. I selected “Time Is Tight” this week because the sound quality is good and because you can see what groovy hep-cats they were back in the day. And speaking of Big In Europw, the Hacienda Brothers have released a live recording from a performance in Oslow Norway called Music for Ranch and Town. Normally I am not a big fan of live CDs, but the sound recording on this show was as close to perfect as I’ve ever heard. If it wasn’t for the audience applause you’d almost think it was a studio album. And the Hacienda Brothers covered Johnny Cash’s “House of the Blues” in addition to all their great originals.
