The Soul Of John Black is the music front for John “JB” Bingham and his latest release “The Good Girl Blues” does nothing less than give the Blues a much needed transplant. The forms of the song and the approach to guitar work are clearly inspired. But instead of being rooted in the Deep South/Delta Blues/poor-man-in-the-countryside heritage like most blues is, JB’s blues creates a distinctly urban feeling. He even manages to work in turntable scratches here and there that add to the song rather than distract from them. Highlihts include “Moon Blues” and “The Good Girl.” But the stand out track is “Swamp Thang,” which manages to combing swamp rcock and rap in ways that will make your head spin.
