Howdy,

I don’t play nearly enough James Brown on Taproot Radio. I think part of it has to do with the fact that so many of his songs are overplayed it starts to sound cliche’ to hear _any_ James Brown. In any case, I going to resolve to play more James Brown’s not-co-commonly hear songs over the next few weeks. And I’ll try to avoid the overplayed ones, but I’ll just warn ya know, I will have to play “Good Foot” before it’s all over with. Speaking of feet, someone posted to the guitar town mailing list a link to an old video of James Brown showing us all the “latest” dance moves including the Boogaloo and the Camel Walk. Woo Hoo. Check out the video link below.

On the twangy side of the fence, (actually the whole point of taproot radio is to get rid of the fence but I’m sticking with the metaphor now anyway becase I’m tired and late with the news), I have been enjoying Crooked Still’s latest effort, Hop High, quite a bit. They keep reminding me of The Cowboy Junkies on speed.

Hop High by Crooked Still

On their CD Hop High, Crooked Still reminds me of a high energy up-tempo version of the Cowboy Junkies. There’s a dark, middle of the night, dramatic energy that drives much of the music that captures the mystery of the deep Appalachians. Crooked Still’s music has a rich base, deep complexity, and subtlety than you don’t get from the traditional Appalachian Bluegrass band. Yeah, it sounds like Bluegrass, but Bluegrass rendered by artists rather than moonshiners.

I saw a post on the Guitar Town mailing list about a petition to cal for the induction of Gram Parsons into the Country Music Hall of Fame. This seems to me an excellent idea. GP’s long term influence on country and country-rock is huge. Please take a minute to sign the petition.

Howdy,

It’s Family Beach Week for the Power’s clan and every bar/pub/restaraunt has a grizzled singer/songwriter cranking out one cover after another of Bob Marley and Jimmy Buffett. Everyonce in a while they’ll cover Van Morrison (“Brown Eyed Girl” of course.) and every once in a while thy’ll throw in a soul tune from Al Green. Now I’m a big fan of Bob Marley _and_ Jimy Buffett. But after a while it gets to be too much. Fear not, I shall struggle through this musical wasteland and survive my week at the beach. :-)

I brought my backlog of unreviewed CDs with me, but between the beach and the booze I haven’t had a minute for music. Hey that sounds like it could be a Buffett song… Anyway, no reviews etc this week

Howdy,

This week I was fortunate to run across a Smithsonian Folkways CD covering Elizabeth Cotten which I snatched up. She’s a folk guitarist born in Chapel Hill in 1895 who taught herself to play banjo and guitar at an early age. Although she develop her talents to the point where she could play a song on the guitar after hearing it played only one time, she never had a chance to play for an audience or be recorded until she befriended the Seeger family and began to work for them in the 40s. I’ll be working most of the tracks from her CD, Freight Trains and Other North Carolina Folk Songs over the next few weeks.

Mark your calendars for The Gourds CD Release party on the 15th at The Hideaway BBQ.

While I agree with these choices, I was surprised and disappointed that “Ripoff” didn’t get more support.

In one of the DJ mailing lists I’m on there’s been some amused/snarky discussion about The Americana Music Association claiming that Eric Clapton is an Americana artist. That led to lots of eye-rolling as well as some debate about whether or not he’s a bluesman as well, so I thought this week’s poll would be to solicit listener feedback on what kind of musician is Eric Clapton.

Elizabeth Cotten didn’t become well known until late in life when she worked for and became family friends with the Seeger family. But she’d been playing banjo and guitar since she was a young child. She was self taught and was able to play a song on the guitar after hearing just one time. Her guitar style was light and delicate and beautiful which was in stark contrast to many other folk players at the time and in stark contrast to the rough life she’d had. With the help of the Seeger family she released Freight Trains and Other North Carolina Folk Songs, which contains the only known original tune of hers, “Freight Train.”
