Just when you think southern rock has devolved to nothing but self-parody, along comes the Brass Uncle Band with their new CD Three Mobtown Gallons to bring back the days when loud, hard, rock songs about outlaws, drinking, and chasing women was, you know, a helluva lot of fun. This Maryland based trio plus assorted supporting musicians can do the smoky middle of the night anthems, acoustic odes, and edgy blues numbers but they are at their best with with the crank-it-up-loud tunes. Highlights include “Hey Hey”, “See Her Again,” and “Hit and Run”.
Born out of the ashes of the Flat Mean Tires, The Javelinas have found a place for themselves in Chicago’s alt.country scene with high-energy rock that’s both unapologetic in its old school roots rock Americana vibe and subversive in the same vein as Iggy Pop and Tom Waits. Highlights include “River Rogue,” “Hero of the Underground,” and “Voodoo Train.”
On their 2004 CD, Loochloosa, Mofro proved they got the funk. On the JJ Grey & Mofro 2007 release, they proved they’ve proved they got soul too. Imagine the Black Crowes mixed with the subdudes and a dash of Tony Joe White and Otis Redding. That’ll give you a pretty good idea of JJ Grey and Mofro. Despite the name of the CD, what we’ve got here is some of the finest southern gothic swamp rock I’ve ever heard. “Turpentine” is unapologetic southern rock. The title track, “Country Ghetto” has a garage-rock guitar riff and fine harmonica backing southern-anthem lyrics. The hair raising track is “Woman” which combines a Stax-era soul sound complete with horns and sax deep slow moving gospel tinged chorus.

Well I found my first favorite CD of 2007 this week, JJ Grey and Mofro’s CD Country Ghetto. Forget the name of the CD. What we have hear is some of the finest swamp rock being produced today. Full of blues and soul. Think Black Crowes crossed with the subdudes, Tony Joe White, and Otis Redding. Lots of tracks from that CD going into rotation.
Also, I ran across a band out of Chicago called the Javelinas. Fast driving roots rock with more than a head nod or two to Tom Wait and Iggy pop. Fun fun fun. Tracks from their CD, Dirtbath, are also going into rotation this week even though strictly speaking I should put them in backfill because the CD is a couple of years old. I’ve heard that they have a 2007 release coming out soon so I’m gonna pounce on that one as soon as I can.

On their 2007 release, Home To You, Po’ Girl continue their alt.folk/jazz crossover explorations The traditional Americana instrumentation is present on most every track, but they are there to support the amazingly interesting and compelling feminine voices. We hear all phases of the feminine mystique on this CD, beautiful, haunting, alluring, playful. Highlights include “skies of grey,” “go on and pass me by,” “green apples,” “old mountain line,” “so lazy,” and “texas.”
Solomon Burke and Van Morrison performing “Fast Train,” which I believe was written by Van Morrison for Solomon Burke.
Soul music doesn’t get any better than this.

Hobex has a new CD out! Mostly its very smooth jazzy soul music with an incredibly positive vibe to it. There are a few tracks that get more earthy as well. I still have never managed to see them live but I hope to some day.
Other highlights from this week include Lucinda Williams’ “Are you alright?” from here new CD. It’s getting some mixed reviews but I give it a thumbs up and this track shows Lu’s songwriting talent in all its glory. Also be sure to listen for Creech Holler’s “Lester Ballard,” doing the gothic mountain rock thing.

The thing that makes you put Hobex’s new CD, Enlightened Soul, in your CD player over and over and over again is the overwhelming positive, energizing vibe blasts from the speakers. This is not “feel good” music, but it’s definitely “pick me up” music. The musicianship from band mates Greg Humphreys, Andy Ware, Dustin Clifford, and Russ Betenbaugh is top notch.
