The Evening Call by Greg Brown

Greg Brown is a singer/song writer with a gravely baritone voice that would make Lou Reed jealous and moody lyrics that would make Van Morrison sit up and take notice. The opening chords of his latest CD, Evening Call, stake out territory in smack dab in the middle of Americana. And the paradoxical thing about Greg Brown is that he fits right in with the vibe of the Prairie Home Companion crowd but he’s just as at home in the modern here and now working in references to cell phones and wireless net access without once coming across as clever or coy. Every song sounds heartfelt. And right after he sings a song about subjects like the net culture and e-mail and themes about the downside of living in our over-connected world, he’ll dig up metaphors from long lost days such as “eating watermelons and spitting out the seeds.” Highlights include “Joy Tears,” “Evening Call,” “Cold+Dark+Wet,” “Mighty Sweet Watermelon,” “Kokomo,” “Skinny Days,” “Whippoorwill”

On his latest release, Back Woods, Tom Eure meanders between blue grass, honky tonk, and deep appalachian folk with such ease it all blends into a deep southern groove. His voice is part Steve Earle, part Kevn Kinney. He’s a singer/songwriter at heart with deeply earnest lyrics in songs such as “Whiskey or Die” and “Tattered in Torn” but he can also do the honky tonk toe-tappers with the best of then as can be heard on “Lookin’ For a Change.” Other highlights include “Ramblin’ Rose” which sounds like it could be from Steve Earle, and “Lost Highway”

Gob Iron is a duo comprised of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt founder Jay Farrar and the multi-talented Anders Parker and on their 2006 release, Death Songs for the Living, they take a set of songs that sound like they could be from the deep Appalachian mountains from two centuries ago and weave into them experimental atmospheric electric guitar sounds and other modern effects and create something that’s even more other-worldly and anachronistic. The best example of this style is “Only A Dream” but there are many many highlights on this CD including “Wayside Tavern” a very soft and beautifully dark song, “Nicotine Blues,” “Buzz and Grind,” “East Virginia Blues,” “Hills of Mexico,” and “Death’s Black Train.” Despite the fact that Farrar has all of the lead vocals except two songs, and despite the fact that the arrangements are pared down and sparse, Anders musical talent shines comes through on every track. Furthermore, there are tracks between the songs which I can only describe as short acoustic guitar riffs, usually no more than a minute or so long, which will simply amaze you with their earnestness and technique.

David Rodriguez is an singer/songwriter whose writes songs that sound like classical compositions that have a dignified, self-confident feel to them, even when he’s singing of heartache and loneliness. Most tracks are arranged in typical singer/songwriter style, the vocals are at the center of the music, accompanied by his acoustic guitar with the occasional drum, bass, accordion, and steel guitar around the edges. Some tracks such as “Citarrista Cielo” highlight his acoustic guitar skills. Many songs remind me of James McMurty songs. Highlights include “Out Of Range,” “Beautiful Rider,” and “Proud Heart.”

Blue Plate Special’s new CD, Can You Dig It serves up blues with a hard edge to it. Lots of feedback, wailing guitars, swinging base lines, and growling lyrics. The blues here range from head bangers to sophisticated trippy urban sounds, to finger poppin’ swing tunes. A fun ride through the night, and yes, I can dig it. Yup

This week, I added new music from Devon Allman’s Honeytribe. Given his namesake, it’s not too surprising that Honeytribe is a sothern rock band through and through, but at the same time, I wouldn’t say he’s a clone of his father.

A while back I had the pleasure of interviewing Bill Noonan after a recent show at The Cave and he gave me a bit of historical education about bands in the Charlotte are from back in the early days of alt.country. One of the bands he mentioned to me was a band he was in called The Rank Outsiders. Formed in 1991 it consisted of Bill Noonan, Gigi Dover, Tom Kuhn, and Ray Mitchell. They put out 3 or 4 abums including “Checkpoint” which I’ve recently added to rotation. This is some great insurgent country/Americana. Reminds me very much of The Knitters. I’ll be adding several tracks from Checkpoint into rotation over the next few weeks.
