Prodigal Son
Originally uploaded by cspowers.

Michael Powers is a black blues musician who spent a good part of his youth in rural North Carolina learning to play guitar by listening to the songs his father and his father’s friends would play on the porch. So you would expect that his music is the deep, traditional, hard times kind of blues. And you see some of that in songs like “You Gotta Go Down,” “It’s A Bloody Life,” and the instrumental “Compassion.” But, truth be told, Michael Powers’ has transcended the down home blues and turned the songs of his father into high energy, guitar centered blues-rock cross overs that beg to be played played along with via air-guitar, just like he used to do as a kid. The opening track, “Going Down” is a good example of Powers’ guitar work, leading with deep, open throated blues backed by crazy complicated guitar riffs. But the tracks that really show off the duality between the old-time vocal styles and Powers’ sophisticated guitar work are “Wild Side” and my personal favorite, “Lay The Hooch Down.”

I think this will probably be the one and only time that I’ll get to use the terms “understated” and “honky tonk” in the same sentence of a review, but that’s what I’m thinking about the Hoyle Brother’s latest effort, One More Draw. Clearly we’re in no holds barred honky tonk territory here. Broken hearts and beer tunes that reminds me of both The Derailers and The Riptones. But at the same time, their musicianship is smooth and good natured. With the Hoyle Brothers you get honky tonk without the in your face bad ass. The Hoyle Brothers’ One More Draw is full of straight ahead two step music perfect for a dance hall Saturday night.

Stand out tracks include the tear jerker duet “Oceans Away,” the full bore Texas swing “Friday,” and the opening track, “Crazy That’s.”

Like the best blues, Mickey Houston’s blues never sound like they are about other people. They are always about himself and his experiences. The fact that we can relate to what he’s going through is incidental to him, at least that’s the impression he gives. The cool thing about “Mickey” B experimenting with the core sound, adding an unusual drum sound on one track, putting fully orchestrated string sections on other tracks, playing with rhythm guitars on other tracks. So even though it’s a blues collection from front to back, each track has a different character to it. There’s always something going on if you listen for it.

Highlight Tracks include the opener “Good Advice.” which sounds like a 60’s show opener for Dustry Springfield or something. That vibe is repeated and amplified in the consciousness raising “Alabama March” which sounds downright psychadelic while sticking to the blues core. “High Sherriff Blues” drops back to a more traditional blues. It’s followed by “Blues Before Sunrise,” which is my favorite track of the CD because it adds a jazzy torch singer vibe to a traditional blues sound. ‘Animal Farm” is also notable because Mickey Houston dares in these politically correct times to hold up the Br’er Rabbit archetype up high as a life issues metaphor in a pleasantly bawdy way.

The Allen Boys will be playing on UNC Campus on October 26th. This is a great chance to hear a sacred steel band.
http://www.johnstoncenter.unc.edu/events/tot.html

From the UNC web site:
Mixing the sounds of gospel with rock and roll and country, The Allen Boys are North Carolina’s only Sacred Steel band. They are pedal steel guitarist DaShawn Hickman, bassist Mitchell Fonville, keyboardist Cameron Moore, and drummer Ranzey Moore. Hailing from a small church in Mt. Airy, they play in a little-known, yet long-standing style of religious music found only in select African American Pentecostal-Holiness churches. This driving, dynamic style—recently popularized by Robert Randolph and The Campbell Brothers—showcases the steel guitar. The steel guitarist plays throughout a church service, helping to move congregants to spiritual rapture. Rarely performing outside of church, The Allen Boys are not to be missed.

Review: The Whiskey Tango Sessions by The Hideaways

The Hideaways
Originally uploaded by cspowers.

The Hideaways release, _The Whiskey Tango Sessions_ launches the band into their new incarnation with smooth Americana tinged with just the right amount of twangy, pedal steel and rock angst. The 12 songs on _The Whiskey Tango_ sessions are wide open songs, you can just about imagine The Hideaways playing these tunes in the middle of the California desert under a wide open night sky while dozens of friends hang around drinking beer by the light of car headlamps.

The disc opens with “Don’t Try To Love Me”, a smooth Americana heart-breaker with at least one obscure reference to the blues. “El Centro County Line” veers more toward pure honky tonk pulling in just about every country lyric cliche’ you can name, and yet by the end of the song you not only forgive them, you feel like thanking them. “Stranger’s Heart” features Jay Farrar inspired nasal twang and guitar riffs that pull the band back more into alt.country territory. “No One In The World” is a traveling song which has guitar riffs that interweave nicely with the vocals. “Picture of Lonely” is a roots rock number tha seems to pay homage to Roy Orbison here and there. “The Way You Control The Lines” is probably my favorite track on the CD, setting the stage with an alt.country angsty ballad feel which proceeds to explode into a wall of sound.

Howdy all,

This week I added Los Lonely Boys’s “Texican Style” from their _Sacred_ CD. Love that border radio sound of theirs. Don’t forget to check out the Taproot podcast for the latest episode of The Taproot Music Spotlight featuring Carrboro based Randy Whitt and the Grits! They put on a show to a full house at the Cat’s Cradle last week.

Junior Brown comes to the Cat’s Cradle tonight bringing with him the musical instrument he invented, the “Guit-steel” which as you might have guessed combines an electric guitar and pedal steel.

Tonight there will be no alt.country, country-rock, “Americana” pretensions at all. This is old fashioned Austin honky tonk music and I’m gonna love it. I mean honestly, how can you not go crazy for lyrics like these from “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead.”

It’s good to see you baby it’s been a long long while
We’re both a whole lot older and seen a lot of miles
But thing are different now since the good ol’ days
And you’ve been in some trouble
Since we went our separate ways
We’ll have to say hello maybe some other time instead
Cause you’re wanted by the police
And my wife thinks you’re dead.

Embrace you’re inner twang, if you dare, and come out to the Cat’s Cradle tonight!
