Byrds Box Set!

Uncategorized  Comments Off on Byrds Box Set!
Aug 302006

I recently ready an article that gave a pretty good concise account of the relationship between Roger McGuinn and Gram Parsons and the Byrds country-rock line up back in the day. Pretty good reading about how McGuinn remained relatively unknown while David Crisby went on to fame and fortune.

One of the things that came up in the article was a mention of a September 26th release of a 4 CD, 1 DVD box set called “There Is A Season” which will chronicle the country-rock days of the Byrds and the musicians they influenced down the road.

That’s definitely going on my Christmas Wish List!!!

Johnny Cash: Ye Old Goth or Cornball?

Uncategorized  Comments Off on Johnny Cash: Ye Old Goth or Cornball?
Aug 172006

Slate has a Johnny Cash article which I thought was pretty interesting. Tries to put him in context of current music. Claims he’s more cornball than anything, and yet the article is full of lauditory comments. So go figure.

My favorite bit:

In other words, Cash was an icon of authenticity, whose mixture of bad-boy attitude and down-home piety excited a rocker dude’s romantic imagination. Rubin’s vision of Cash as Ye Olde Goth is evident in the choice of repertoire—he steered the singer toward dark, death-haunted folk songs like “Mary of the Wild Moor” and covers of Danzig and Nine Inch Nails—and in the relentlessly monochrome musical settings.

Review: Snake Farm by Ray Wylie Hubbard

Uncategorized  Comments Off on Review: Snake Farm by Ray Wylie Hubbard

Ray Wylie Hubbard
Originally uploaded by cspowers.

I have to file off all the mental labels that I’ve attached to Ray Wylie Hubbard over the years. I’ve always thought of Ray Wylie Hubbard as the quintessential progressive country musician, roaming around the backwoods of Texas. And maybe once he was. But judging from his 2006 release, Snake Farm, I think it’s more correct to say that he’s one of the most original blues men alive today. People just don’t recognize Ray Wylie Hubbard as a blues man because a) his songs are based in Texas usually, b) the instrumentation is more like a rock band, and c) his songs are so stunningly original. The guitar work is courtesy of band mate and co-producer Gurf Morlix is loud, hard, ryhtmic, and full of hooks that comeback to you like a dinner of cheap catfish and hushpuppies, as the song says.

Ray Wylie Hubbard’s searching for the dark and gothic psche much in the same way many southern rock bands are trying to do, but rather than digging it out of the kudzu forset of southern backwoods, he’s looking for it in the back forty. in that stand of mesquite scrub that’s never quite been cleared. I love Ray Wylie Hubbard lyrics in the same way I love the Gourds lyrics. Nothing is glorified. Nothing is parodied, Nothing sounds so terribly out of the ordinary, but by the time you get to the end of his songs, you’re kinda creeped out. Hubbard’s lyrics are amazingly cryptic considering the grade school vocabulary; unsettling in an unassuming way. Mythic without being old fashioned. For example in the song “Rabbit,” Ray Wylie Hubbard cites Otis Redding as a muse-like figure:

I saw this old dog chasing this rabbit
I saw dog chasing this rabbit.
I saw a dog was chasing this rabbit
It was on a Sunday about noon

I said to the rabbit, “You gonna make it?”
I said to the rabbit, “Are you gonna make it? “
I said the the rabbit, “You gonna make it?”
And the rabbit said, “Well I got to.”

Well a woman’s heart is a sacred thing
a woman’s heart is a sacred thing
a woman’s heart is a sacred thing
so what’s a man to do?

Try a little tenderness Otis Redding said
Try a little tenderness is what he said
Try a little tenderness is what Otis said
and then he said “I Got to. Got to. Good God, Watch Me Work”

In addition to an uncanny ability to tap into everyman mythopoetics, Hubbard has an unusually subtle ability to tweak noses. Take these lines from “Killowatts” for example.

God smiles and lights a cigarette
and says that’s the souls I ain’t gonna get.
I’d take all the little critters if I could
Some are too smart for their own damn good
They don’t even believe I’m here
They don’t see where I’ve been
Every now and then I hear one say
Get me out of this and I’ll never do it again
All it takes is brains and faith
And a few kilowatts of sweat and grace

This is quintessential Ray Wylie Hubbard. Most people of Christian faith would have absolutely no problem with lyrics that advocate getting in touch with The Lord through brains, sweat, kilowatts and grace. It’s the anti-smoking crowd that’s going to go into apocalyptic fits over the positive associations made with smoking. That’s why I love this guy’s lyrics. Always coming up with a new and interesting way to get under folks’ skin.
