Tres Chicas were a big hit at the Raleigh Wide open festival. Thousands flocked to the open air stage. The constant wind blowing from behind the stage made it kinda difficult for them to concentrate on the music, but they delivered a great show as usual, combining hits from both their Sweetwater and Bloom, Red, and the Ordinary Girl CD. It’s great to see them getting the exposure they deserve in their home town!

Last night I went to The Blue Bayou club in Hillsborough to see Joe Swank and The Zen Pirates and The Two Dollar Pistols. The place was packed. Although consideirng the size of the club, that’s not saying a whole lot. But still it was a good crowd. Everything from blues folks, to crunchy granola types, to geek girls were there. And yes, one or two twang fans as well. Joe Swank did several tracks from his upcoming CD and closed with a great rendition of “Sunday Morning Coming Down”. The Two Dollar Pistols played my second favorite song of theirs “Lonely All Alone” which is oh so apropos these days

The Live365 playlist has been refreshed. New music this week:

American V: A Hundred Highways CD from Johnny Cash
After The Rain from Irma Thomas
Hell Under Skullbones by Graham Lindsey

New tracks from Malcolm Holcombe

Some backfill added too, including Frank Black (of Pixies fame) covering “Dark End of the Street”, Hooverville, Dave Alvin, and Charlie Sohmer.

I also added a special track from a new soul band called The Dynamites. They are touring around doing an old school funk and soul show that will knock your socks off so watch for them in your local listings.

Review: God’s Tattoos by William Lee Ellis

Uncategorized  Comments Off on Review: God’s Tattoos by William Lee Ellis

On God’s Tattoos, William Lee Ellis shares an energy and inspiration that’s almost too uplifiting to be a blues but it’s also little too gritty and real-world to be gospel. Lots of good clean, crisp, foot-tapping guitar on a wide variety of songs. Yes, there are very typical blues sounding tunes, such as “Four Horses.” But you also get “Search My Heart”, traditional gospel tunes done up as a southern rock anthem. You also get latin-ish rhythmic number, (is that a rumba?) on “God’s Tattoos.”

Highlight Tracks:
Track / Song / Notes
1 / Snakes In My Garden/ Crisp driving, foot tapping slide guitar work coupled with lyrics about being tempted by the devil.
2 / God’s Tattoos / Accordion doesn’t hide the fact that this is a crooning rumba
4 / Search My Heart / Old time gospel tune done as a southern rock anthem.
7 / The Call / More good guitar work Liner notes that this is a post-9/11 call.
3 / When Leadbelly Walked The River Like Christ / beautiful and sad instrumental
